We have a small fleet of Golf TDI bluemotions as pool cars. They're leased - 24 months, maintained etc etc. Trouble is, VW Financial Services can be a bit picky when they're returned...

One of the companies in the Group manages a wide and varied portfolio of properties, from rural commercial (= barns :p) to 10,000m2 + factories. The car they use suffers a bit, and gets taken places I wouldn't really want to take a car. Return penalties can be high...last one was stung for £750 on scuffed and chipped paintwork.

Easy I thought - let's save some money and get them a white van! Leasing wasn't going to work for the reasons of likely damage, but no fear, Evans Halshaw had some pre reg Peugot Bippers for £5,991 + VAT. Now there weren't any at our nearest dealer, but they could get one from York, so deposit paid before Easter and nothing further thought of it...

Until I got a call just after Easter so say: Terribly sorry, York had sold the van I'd put a deposit on. System issues, very apologetic, usual excuses... I wasn't terribly happy, but also wasn't going to spend much time arguing about the existence, or otherwise, of a £6k van. Deposit returned, and an alternative found. Another deposit placed on a pre reg Renault Kangoo Energy - a bit more expensive at £6,700 + VAT, but it was white, had 75bhp and was available.

Van was due to be delivered on Friday last week. Except I had a call on Wednesday to say the delivery driver had just come to collect it, and noticed someone had reversed into it and dented the bonnet! CurrentlÅ· in the bodyshop having it replaced...

So, do things really come in threes? Should I just have let them have another golf ;)

Oh, and I'm probably being a little unfair on Renault. After all, it's really Peugeots fault... If they hadn't sold the Bipper... Still, they're all French ;)

Get them the best of both worlds - an ex-British Gas VW Caddy van, as my elder son, a plumber, has. The SDI engine is unstressed and should last a long time.

The SDI engine is unstressed...

...but does that go for the drivers in the crocodile behind him?

Probably worth learning at least the basics of Zen meditation.

I'd probably go more upmarket for lessons in Zen meditation - perhaps from someone who has a £35,000 Mercedes with only four cylinders...

:)

Better ask Humph then. Mine's a £16,000 Mercedes, remember. Someone here's just paid almost that much for a Dacia.
