Lidl motoring stuff is out today - headlamp bulbs (£3.99 for two). H7s and H4s available, some labelled longlife, some labelled +50% brightness. I got the 50%ers.
By coincidence, I was on my way to a store this morning to get some as spare stock, when lo and behold the SID display in my car notified me of a front lamp failure. Looking forward to skinning the old knuckles at lunch time. Quite pleased with the old SAAB for keeping the bulb going until Lidl offers day. Jolly good show and very considerate of it. Must be thanking me for ordering a new gearbox.

"Lidl motoring stuff is out today - headlamp bulbs..........."
What brand were the headlamp bulbs?
Several years ago, after frequent failures of bulbs in the Focus, I was advised to 'only use decent quality branded bulbs'. That was excellent advice - I now use, generally Osrams, which seem to last for 5 or 6 years years as opposed to 5 or 6 months.
Eurocarparts is currently selling Osram H7s for £2.39.

Nasty Lidl bulbs? No wonder the Saab hates you and the Volvo refused to join your family
Has the dog left yet?

Never ceases to amaze me, the brand fixation thing. Lidl's bulbs are good quality, as is everything they sell. They come in a very robust, flip top hard plastic case too, rather than a flimsy cardboard box of some lousy plastic and cardboard thing you have to cut to open. Very good for keeping them safe and organised in the car.

Nobody's forcing anyone to buy them, if you want Osrams from ECP good luck, others may be interested in the Lidl ones.
I got the oil filter wrench and the 3-way power adapter today too. Will come in handy for the long summer holiday drive.
Dog is happily chewing on a dentastick (no name brand) at home, thanks for asking. Nearly 17 and only went missing once. Found it in a pub garden drinking beer and eating sausages. Can't say I blame it.

"They come in a very robust, flip top hard plastic case too,"
If you don't like skinning your knuckles whilst replacing bulbs, can I suggest that you buy Lidl's bulbs, throw the bulbs away and use the robust plastic cases for storing your Osrams? ;-)

The Osrams at ECP, are they incandescent or halogen? The Lidl ones I've just got are halogen, I think.
|
Shirley Halogens are incandescent? The halogen gas allows the filament to run hotter/longer:

"The Osrams at ECP, are they incandescent or halogen?"
I understand that they're halogens. I just tried to copy a link, but the ECP website is playing silly games.
BTW, I am definitely not a brand-freak, but my experiences with bulbs has led me to acknowledge that quality is more important than price. It isn't the cost of the bulbs that bothers me - it's the lousy job of doing the replacement.

Eh, how does the quality of the bulb affect the ease of replacement?
Anyway, just did the swap. 2 minutes flat, really easy to do on the SAAB, good access and evidently designed for ease of maintenance.
Turns out the Lidl bulbs are made by Wotan in Germany (says so on the bulbs themselves, although they are branded "Ultimate Speed" on the box, like many of Lidl's motoring products).
Is that a good enough brand for everyone? The blown bulb was an Osram, as it happens.

Ah Wotan, the one eyed god,

The directors of Renault must be devotees of that particular god, going on how many Scenics drive around one-eyed.

Er - obvious innit? You don't have to do it so often. I'd rather skin my knuckles once than 12 times.
SIGH ;-(
|
Ah, I see, you meant the frequency of replacement rather than ease. Not a problem with the SAAB, the change is so easy I don't mind if it happens slightly more frequently from that perspective.

Also battery charger for £13.99.

We're all different of course and do it should be, but I never skimp on tyres, brakes or headlamp bulbs ( aye even the ones I pay for myself ) Being able to rely on steering, stopping and seeing feel pretty important to me.

The Philips hi-output halogen bulbs I bought for the Yaris 10 years ago are still going strong. Indeed, no bulb has failed on the Yaris in my ownership. (Made in Japan)

My daughter's chap has never had a bulb fail in their Peugeot 107 in his ownership - 07 plate bought new. (Made in France).

Anybody know what the 'flat' type windscreen wipers Lidl sells are like? They are at our local branch in France at the moment for 15 euros a pair.
I paid top dollar for a pair of 'genuine' replacements from a Honda dealer in the UK last summer and one of them has been a dud from the start - leaves a nasty unwiped area, although not in the line of vision. I would have taken it up with Honda if I was still over there. Perhaps I should have been wary after the Honda dealership sent me to their Citroen dealership next door to pick them up.
I've been waiting for Lidl to come up with something...

Not skimping as a concept is unrelated to always buying a famous brand. The Sailun all season tyres on the SAAB are proving to be excellent - under 200 quid for 4 fitted, purchased because they were the best value tyre rated B for wet grip which I could find. These headlamp bulbs today are evidently good quality at a great price. I don't think I'm skimping just because my tyres don't say Michelin and my bulbs don't say Osram.

Fair enough, like I said were all different and entitled to a view. I've stated mine and you have quite rightly stated yours.
It makes me feel better to follow my instincts and it clearly has the same effect on you to follow yours.
Ergo we are both happy and this is good.

You are all individuals.

Did the door mirrors fall off the westfield?

Didn't have any doors.
Edit - take it you missed the memo too?

You know, it must have crossed in the post with the STFU about the Westfield memo.

I am not an individual...slurp, I am an elephant, slurp.
Haven't you got to be careful with bulbs being UV compliant with plastic headlamp lenses, or some such nonsense or did I imagine that?
|
Guess you can always keep a spare bulb in the trunk then.

Only if you reside on the other side of the pond...

Yeah, it's not a difficult tusk

I wouldn't use LIDL [or Ring] bulbs in my car, but then I wouldn't buy LIDL's chocolate either.

OY! Lidl's shock-o-lar is absolute purr - fection.

I myself am a Green & Black's man.

This morning the frost - more like black ice - on my windscreen resulted in the wiper rubber blades tearing their edges when they auto-started on switching on the engine. At the same time, the OEM offside front low-beam lamp blew. The bulb has seen heavy usage being on most of the time as a daylight running lamp.
I have just bought a set of Lidl wipers and a set H7 long-life bulbs; at around one third the price of equivalent Bosch blades and Osram or Philips bulbs.
Set of 24"/18" blades was £5 at Lidl. Equivalent Bosch set at Eurocarparts costs £15 (Super Plus Universal Wiper Blade Set Sp24/18S With Spoiler On Rh Side)
TWO H7 long life bulbs were £4 at Lidl. Equivalent H7 Osram Ultra Life at Eurocarparts costs £6.40 for a single bulb.
I am not looking forward to replacing the offside bulb! The car in question is a Vectra C 2007 facelift model.
|
Worth less than the bulb Bri. 0:-)
|
>> I am not looking forward to replacing the offside bulb! The car in question is a Vectra C 2007 facelift model.
Air box removal, or partial bumper removal, followed by taking the headlight out.
Personally I prefer the latter as the scratches on the back of my hand while performing the former took a long time to heal up.
Bumper removal isn't as daunting as it sounds, btw. A few bolts and it's off. Got it down to approx. 10 mins removing, replacing the bulbs, and refitting again. Got fed up changing the dip beam bulbs every 8 months or so in the end and fitted HIDs instead, which had I listened to the advice of the folks on Vectra-C.com in the first place, I wouldn't have needed to keep changing bulbs. The HIDs made a world of difference too as the facelift always had poor dipped beam headlights because of the projector lenses and halogen bulb combination.

Both Aldi and Lidl used well known brand names to supply products of various types under OEM labels; Aldi has Medion and Tevion, for instance, whilst one of Lidl's brand names is Silvercrest; bought various items from both outlets.
Only problem was a few years ago, when I bought a Silvercrest multi-port USB hub which cost £6.99 and was guaranteed for three years.
It went faulty close to the end of the warranty, so I contacted the freefone support number supplied. A very helpful individual confirmed the details about the hub and arranged for a replacement to be sent to me.
It arrived three or four days later, having been dispatched from Germany. Pretty good service it seems to me.
