As trailers in the UK don't have their own reg number, if one is towed in europe by a foreign registered truck, what number plate does it display?

And does this apply to cars towing trailers also?

There's the opposite problem in France, where caravans are registered, and have their own number plate.

If I break down in my UK registered car and UK caravan, and decide to hire a French car, I don't think I can legally tow my caravan. If I leave the UK number on the caravan, that;s wrong. And I can't get one to match the towcar, because that's wrong too.

Can't be long before we have trailer registration in the UK?

You should have suggested that before the election, we would have had an outfit the size of DVLA to administer it.

To a certain extent we already do, as LGV trailers are required to pass an MOT, and carry a disc to certify the fact.

With great respect to the diligent caravanners amonst our ranks who do check and maintain their pride and joy, I would like to see that extended to all caravans and trailers. Some of the things I see being towed around wouldn't be acceptable on Scrapheap Challenge.

vosa started on the disgraceful horse boxes that have now mainly been scrapped, they should now go for the trailers your average council house has perched up its drive and the bearings held on with 4 inch nails

So is a UK trailer only legal in the rest of europe if it's being towed by a UK car/truck? What happens if I want to bring back a trailer from england with my swedish registered car? And having got the trailer here, do the same flaky rules apply about re-registering it apply, as it's changed from a trailer to a 'vehicle'.

Having done this, is it then ok to tow it with my UK registered car in england, or do I have to put on a UK plate again?

I do believe one of 'em was bought by a Mr. Brundstrom of somewhere in North Wales, to house part of his camera collection! ;-)

Yes BB that's what I'm on about. In the ever-more-farcical world of road transport legislation and enforcement, where traditional roped and sheeted flatbed loading is about to become illegal for no more reason than that the ropes "haven't been safety tested", I'd like to see a bit of a level playing field. I have absolutely no problems whatsoever with VOSA stopping dodgy HGV's, but it irks me when I see things such as you describe being towed around, often without lights, registration plates and tyre tread, and being ignored by those self-appointed "guardians" of our safety.

Caravans should carry a registration plate, in addition to the car plate (one above the other), should be insured (and on the MID) and taxed, complete with tax disc.

What's the point of two registration plates?

Caravans/trailers are insured against any third party damage today (they're covered by the car insurance). What other risk would you want them insured for?

Would the tax really bring in enough revenue to cover its costs?

You miss the biggest thing which might be a good idea - MOT.

There is already a separate driving test for towing medium-large caravans (its been law since 1997)

Having recently driven in Switzerland I noticed that caravans have to have their own separate motorway vignette (Swiss motorway annual tax) - costs the same as the car 40 CHF.
They are - in fairness - taking up the roadspace of 2 vehicles.
