SWMBOs Fiesta (2nd hand at 6 months old) came with two identical keys. I've no idea if they both worked when we got it.
One key always works (I don't mean a specific one, just one of the two).
So if I use the self programming process to programme the one which isn't working, I can get that working. But the first one stops working!!
Both work manually all the time.
I'm not that bothered really but does anyone have any ideas?
I think it was this method of programming, or very similar.
FORD Focus (Radio 3 Button) - Key Remote Programming
1. Switch Ignition On/Off (II/0) 4 times within 6 seconds until a sound is made.
2. Press any button on Remote until a sound is made.
3. To program additional Remotes, repeat after 2 seconds after the sound.
4. Turn Ignition On/Off to exit.
5. A maximum of 4 remotes can be programmed

If it is the "PATS" system and it is like my old Mondeo and my Jaguar then you need TWO programmed keys to programme any others.
I think you have only one programmed key so you procedure is just resetting one key.
Dealers usually charge big bucks to sort it out
Talk to a locksmith who deals with such keys.
They are usually identified on the Fiesta owners type web sites.

Ah that sounds plausible. The spare sits in the key safe most of the time so I'm not about to go spending on fixing it... If it didn't work manually them of course I'd have to. Thanks.

How long ago did you buy the car?
Buying a 6 mth old car it is not unreasonable to expect both keys worked!
I'd go back to your dealer who sold the car - ex-day rent car?

Had it a couple of years now, never really noticed till this week. Yeah, from the Channel Islands, less than 300 miles on it when we bought it.

It sounds like the issue I had with my 59 reg Mondeo. The full details elude me now but as I recall you needed to reprogramme both keys within a few minutes of one another and then both worked. Have you tried that?

No Martin, not tried that but I will next weekend. I did read something similar on another forum. I don't want to disable them both though!
Re speaking to a locksmith - as I said, this isn't high on the list of priorities so only no-cost options are viable... :-)

Seconded.
The specialist locksmith will clone the working key's transponder info onto the non-working one, so the car "sees" the same key whichever you use.
The only downside is you can't then use this to program a third key, as the car thinks you still only have one key.

From what I read on forums, that is the situation.
I have the same keys/PATS on my X type. I have two proper keys with remote buttons and I am in the process of creating a couple of spare basic keys.
Plan is to get non branded Ford style keys that are easy to carry/hide and of course do not shout which car the fit.

Yes I do know the code for my Tibbe key ( a simple task,, maybe all owners should do it ) so I could get a blank cut , maybe by the AA etc.
That would give me access to the interior but not start the car and also set off the alarm.
It will not allow access to the boot. Accees via the back seat is a no no.
I have not looked up the details of applying an earth to a certain wire in the loom that will release the boot catch.
I have now implemented a 10p fix so I can now always get access to the boot.
Why cannot life be simple?

Isn't that the norm for most cars nowadays? I think the last Vauxhall I had with a keyhole for the boot was a 2004 Vectra. All since then have had a push button, but no keyhole.

I recall locking my only key in the boot of a rental Chrysler Sebring convertible a few years back, coincidentally at Sebring raceway in Florida.
Hire company said the area wasn't covered by any cover they provided. There wwere wrecker trucks and a large police presence on site but neither could/would help.
The doors were unlocked, but the boot release button didn't work, so a skinny mate managed to break the back seat and convertible gubbins enough to get his arm through and retrieve the key.
I expected to hear from the rental company about it but never did.
btw a Canadian mate said to me to always check under the spare wheel in US rental cars, as that is often where the second key is. He's been right on about 3 years out of 10+. Other years they've given me more than one key, but always on a loop of cable - which takes some cutting, but is do-able with the right tools!! :-)

Reading your instructions in the first post, I interpret it to mean after you press the button on the first remote to programme it.... you then immediately do the second one. You don't repeat the whole process. You're not starting from step 1 for the second remote are you?

Just a few points to clarify the situation with keys on these late model Fiestas.
The pats system (passive anti theft)is an independent system to the remote locking.it is possible to re-sync the cd locking part of the key by ignition on/off 4 times then press one button on each of the keys,one after the other.It is not possible to programme another pats key onto the system via the old method of having at least 2 working keys.Any new keys have to be programmed via the obd diagnostic link with suitable equipt.
