I may be going up to Freck' before xmas. I gather it's just M5 M6 all the way. Midweek up and Sunday back. Any horrible roadworks/hold ups at present?
Also what to go and and see when I'm there? The Trough of Bowland has been recommended.

N Somerset/Bristol to Cribbs Causeway etc at peak times (I assume you know that one though). Birmingham area and on to Stafford is another bottleneck as is the N Staffs/S Cheshire section of M6 J16 to J19.
The latter just seems to be volume and that effect where it just needs one or two people to break for a 'ripple' to go back miles. No easy avoid for it though

I shall be hiring a car. Auto'. Presume diesel. Mondeo or Insignia? Neither is not an option.

Well amir in Freckleton, sis sing with rain. Journey up ok except for a bit of congestion around Birmingham and some roadworks on M6. In all added about 35 minutes to journey. Came here in the Colt. Quite comfy which surprised me for such a journey. 42 MPG.

The Trough of Bowland is a great place to visit, whilst you are also within easy reach of the Lakes.
If you are adventurous, you could go across to the North East and visit places like the Beamish Museum, Durham and even the Metro shopping centre near Gateshead.

The big question is Why ? Why are you going, and who are you staying with.
It is possible to either, use Bla Bla car, or some other Share my ride type company, and get someone else to drive you, or sell spare seats to people who need to go in that direction, and get them to contribute yo your costs

Have been to Windemere (Bowness). Had a mooch around locally. I like Lytham very much. In fact very very much. A bit of what England used to be like. A very refreshing place in fact.
Has Wotspur been drinking?

Lytham was an eye opener. Smart youngsters out dining. Not a football shirt in sight. All polite and some of the biggest young Rugby players I've ever seen. Oh! And the 'Talent'. Oh! Yes....... The Talent. Phew....
|
Lytham St Annes is a truly pleasant town to visit (or to be accurate Lytham and St Annes), with splendid shops, great cafes and restaurants and the well maintained Lowther Gardens. A cntinution, in fact, of the original appeal of the older coastal towns.
The council has also long resisted the urge of similar bodies in the North West to impose strict/draconian parking charges and fines on motorists, with plenty of free parking throughout the town.
No wonder people visit the town from far and wide....:-)

I take my old Mum once a year to stay in a hotel at either Lytham or St Anne's. My brother collects her a few days later. It's the one further North on the coast and I think it's a dump. Lots of charity shops and Poundland type places. The once nice Dept store closed down ( so she tells me) and the tide is always out. The 'prom' is ok for a bracing walk but you would have to pay me to stay there.
Having said that, I'm away late Jan to spend time in a supposedly luxury top floor apt just S of Benidorm with friends,so my taste is questionable to say the least.

Lytham is one of those time warp places like Frinton on Sea in Essex. I would imagine it's rather suffocating to live there. A lot of petty snobbery and curtain twitching.
|
Well I've never come across anything of that sort whenever I've visited Lytham and St Annes and that's quite regularly.
Certainly it's years ahead of its brash neighbour up the road, Blackpool.

Yesterday afternoon we were driven along Blackpool sea front. I had last been there 41 years ago and to be honest was so p***ed I remember a little and forgot a lot, BUT I have never seen such a Chavvy tip in all of my life as I saw yesterday. Tracky bottoms (grey). Hoodies of various colours, mainly (grey) dilapidated buildings and nought to recommend it to anyone. An 'Earner' though I have no doubt
Lytham, not St. Anne's, is to my eye a place of wonder. Old family run shops. McDonald's and Kentrucky sheet, forced to the edge of town. Prices are high, but that's what keeps it 'Right'. Lowering the prices - lowers the standards - attract the idiots and BINGO, we're back to every other town land.
I have yet to explore the Ribble valley, but it is firmly on the agenda as is the Trough of Bowland.
Peace on you all.

It must be St Anne's where my mother stays then! I must look at Lytham when next there.
As a contrast to Blackpool, I am currently ensconced in a cheap Motel 6 in a town/ city called Scottsdale, part of the vast Phoenix conurbation. I passed through here in late Sept, discovered a few nice places to eat within my means ( great burger, salads , 3 pints and change from £20 inc tip). My favourite is Rehab Burger!
Anyway, it is a very affluent area. Lots of Sat night cruising.. ( cars not hookers) Ferraris, Lambos, Hot Rods of all descriptions and old Beautifully restored American cars. Streets full of expensive galleries for those with lots of $$. I'm next door to an excellent breakfast/ lunch diner, whose car park was jammed full of expensive machinery this morning, and the motel has a pool & jacuzzi where I'm off to next! I simply can't think of a greater contrast to Blackpool.
I don't really fit into the Scottsdale scene in my old tee, rafting shorts, well worn Teva's and painted toe nails ( don't ask but copious amounts of alcohol was involved).
Happy Sunday

One more thing MD, if you're up the Ribble valley can you check out that my gaff in Giggleswick is still there please? My local ( one of) the Harts Head in Gigg has a lovely S facing beer garden, log fires & daily newspapers indoors & friendly folks to chat to. The Talbot in Settle has ever changing real ales & good value food.

Home now dear boy. Hope to return for Lytham Prom' next year if not before.

Hi,
We have been visiting this area very regularly(very!) as we have had a static caravan near to Blackpool for about 26 years now.As you say MD,Lytham is a lovely town, and we also like St Annes....great for a walk along the prom on a nice sunny day.
Everybody has different views about Blackpool itself, some love it and some hate it.We do not go into town that often but if you are looking for a bit of fun on a saturday afternoon/night it does fit the bill! Also there are some great hotels and bars...:).
We also like Cleveleys, and Fleetwood which is worth a visit now.
Overall the Fylde is a great place to visit/holiday.....end of Blackpool Tourism promo!
Cheers....Phil.
