I don't think its "for" anything. Its a bit like high tech meccano.

I don't really want to do it, but I kind of wish I was the sort of person who would want to do it.

The only reason to do that, is to say "look what I built" but then when they say "but what does it do" is the point where the wind drops right out of your sails.

You need to be a bit more fundamental than that. In your case friends of any sort would be useful.
