I'm still going to wait to see if they'll change my paper licence for free. :)

There was talk of recalling all the old licences, but apparently the Government has backed away from that.

I've only got an old paper-style licence - they could just wait for us to fade away.

I suppose that if I ever decided not to replace my passport, a photo-licence could be a useful form of ID.

Don't you have to renew/replace when you are 70? That will then be a new photo-card licence thing.

I never thought of that! I'm sure someone will be along shortly with all the details.

DVLA can use your passport photo for the renewal at 70 and subsequent renewals. Recently did mine online, new licence recieved by return of post, (two or three days).

"Recently did mine online,"

From what I can see, it costs £20 for a photo-licence. Does that mean that it costs £20 every 3 years after you reach age 70?

Mine was free, as are renwals after 70, but I already had a photo licence. Don't know about an upgrade to a photo at 70.

Thanks, ON - I am starting to warm to the idea ;-)

Even if you retain your passport it's useful as portable ID that's just there in your wallet. The Lad used his last weekend for security ID on domestic flights Manchester/Exeter and return.

Use mine all the time as casual ID - for picking up parcels and the like. Worked in the US too and saved me carrying my passport everywhere. But I'm sure for some here the end of the paper licence will be another unwelcome sign that the 1950s really are gone for good. You can't even ask a policeman the time any more.

I'm sure you can.

Well... if you can find one.

Maybe they should start putting clocks on speed cameras?

I wouldn't risk it - he might have a taser.
