My pal unlocked his MK V Golf yesterday but the RNS door didn't unlock. The childproof lock was not on, and the door cannot be opened using either the outside or inside door handles. The electric window still works normally. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Try taking the door card off and then you'll have a better idea of what's gone wrong.

Is it possible to get the door card off with the door shut ?

You should be able at least get enough off to have a look inside. Although never had a golf I'm not sure how the door cards come off. Have you tried the owner forums or youtube?

It is probably the door lock actuator that has failed.(very common on these).Access to the actuator cannot be made by removing the door card ,it is necessary to remove the metal exterior door skin ,which is bolted on.However if the door cannot be opened ,then the latch may need to be smashed off from inside the door.Try starting the car and hold the revs up to around 2000 rpm, then operate the unlock switch inside the car,if you are lucky ,the latch will open.

Just a quick update.
The door was unlocked by lowering the window, removing rubber seal & poking round for a couple of hours (allegedly) At least it was non-destructive.
