 Getting round the "no swearing" rule - L'escargot
Just lately there's been an increase in the use of asterisks in place of letters to enable the sneaky use of swear words. It's not funny and it's not clever. The offenders will know to whom I'm referring.

IMO it's also not that serious either. In most cases the swear filter is fitting the stars, not the poster. Once people see how stupid it looks they will (usually) stop doing it. If and when it becomes really excessive or offensive the mods will usually step in.

The swear filter sometimes sees a rude word where there isn't one.

I wonder what it makes of the Humberside town of Scunthorpe?

Yes, ok, no need to test it. That's already been extensively done in the old place and tweaked here where necessary.

It's inevitable that the occasional innocent word will get caught by it, but there's nothing we can do about that when an innocent word may well also contain a swear word. The filter isn't intelligent enough to differentiate between the two. This isn't the only forum where this happens, btw.

The old place seems to have a newer filter which does not allow scrap or scrappage without stars, whereas the Khoosys filter there used to allow all that crap.

(seems so on preview; the old place ignored the e and saw word used in the Americas as a disparaging reference to Hispanics)

(for the lucky folks who don't have to put up with IT, the owl book is a book on Regular Expressions, an obscure language for describing patterns to be matched in text. It's called the owl book because it's got a picture of an owl on the front cover, all the O'Reilly books in the series have an animal of some sort on the front cover).

It would seem not. Anyone else got a Victorian bike with a large wheel at the front and a small one at the rear, named after a penny and a quarter of a penny?

As said, innocent words can get picked on by the swear filter. If we see this has occured, we'll edit the post and correct things - as I've just done here
