Some people go into jobs like that because they care.
Close to home, some people also leave them for the same reason; seeing the lack of care that the system results in, in the NHS at least, was too much to bear for a couple of people I know.
I work in the private sector; a commercial job, with no great social consequences other than for me and my family. I can't remember when I last had a day off sick, though I've worked at home a couple of times in the last three years with coughs and colds. I do a lot of unpaid overtime like many others.
I consider myself fortunate - I don't work unsocial hours, my weekends are mainly my own, and I'm still clogging as we say in Yorkshire.
I could do with downshifting though, work is interfering with my life too much. Anybody know of a nice little job going on a street-naming team?
