Bit random this:

I'm sure we all have tins/boxes of nuts/bolts/screws miscellaneous as they will 'come in useful one day'. But what else do you hang onto just in case.

Me, I have:

1. A vast amount of empty SMA baby milk tins ( the kids are nearly 18 ) recently culled by half.
2. Black plastic ice cream cartoons with lids and a quantity of those clear cartoons Chinese food comes in.
3. Aerosol lids. Useful for decanting small amounts of paint into.
4. Heinz Beans type tins for soaking brushes in. The ring pull ones are the business.
5. Aerosol straws.
6. Aerosol atomisers to replace those that get bunged up.
7. Numerous lengths of wood and offcuts.
8. Box full of car light bulbs miscellaneous.
9. Offcuts and lengths of steel from various projects.

Well the list would be so long even after throwing out hundreds and hundreds of items when we retired from our tractor owning days.

However the one thing that was of use just a couple of hours ago was my 70 Chinese takeaway cartons containing fairly well sorted/sized screws, nuts, bolts, washers, nails & fastenings etc... contents clearly marked in permanent marker.

Took the MAF sensor off the 525D for routine cleaning and it was held into a plastic ducting with two large coarse self tap type screws with a 5-point Torx tamper proof top which was about the only tamper proof fitting I didn't have the tool for. Managed to get them out with a fiddle but the heads ended up a little mangled so into the takeaway boxes and found an identical dia/length/thread pair of screws with an ordinary Phillips head.

Fridge with chilled contents. Separately potatoes, onions, apples. Roof box, two ladders, table, 4 chairs, beer, wine. 50+ tins of part used paint / varnish. DIY and car tools. Steel ramps, several jacks, axle stands. Old car supplies, e.g. 1975 Escort fanbelt, 1980 Fiesta locking petrol cap. 1978 Krooklock. Boxes of screws/nuts/bolts/nails etc. Pushbike, boxes of wall / floor tiles. Wood offcuts. Discarded children's toys. Old camping equipment. Several started but strangely unfinished DIY projects. Ear defenders c. 1976. Plaster coving remnants. Edge beading for plaster, plumbing stuff ..... and much, much more.

I really must clear most of it out.

My garage/workshop is 18 ft long by 36 ft across...so it would take about 4 hours to list all my kit.

Like Slidey, the old car lives in there, plenty of room round it to work and keep the two bikes, the pushbike and a million other things. The workshop section holds all the major tools, drill press, gas welder, parts washer, compressor,generator, etc. Most of the tools live in there with all the boxed stuff, screws, bolts, fittings, steel, etc. The rear 6 X 16 ft is partitioned off for the model railway.

Under the railway are several things in the pipeline for disposal. A wheelchair, a bedroom suite of wardrobe/chest/bedside cabinet, an 18th century bow fronted corner wall cupboard, a folding card table, a motor cycle top box and a lot of other stuff. It's clearout time !

Also in there are 6 Jowett flat four engines and 4 front wings, my box of mains electric stuff and box of plumbing kit.

I've made a start by selling the kit of parts to make a BSA Bantam and our old dining table and chairs. Thank God for Gumtree !

I've even got a boxed, mint Churchill nodding dog in there !

There are two large cardboard boxes in my garage which are currently underneath a old table top supporting it and forming a, well, table I suppose. Now I know they came from the "old house" when we moved and they have the word "garage" written on them in felt tip in my writing. I know I must have placed them there when we moved in with a view to getting around to unpacking them when time allowed.

It is a bit embarrassing to admit that was 12 years ago and I can't for the life of me remember or even begin to guess what is in them.

This thread has revived my curiousity. The very first wet Sunday we get I shall certainly think about maybe opening them. Perhaps.
