Mobile phone advice - my turn now! - nice but dim
My Nokia C6 has started to play up where no sound is coming from the ear speaker yet the loudspeaker works. I've tried to remedy this by fitting a new touch panel complete with replacement speaker to no success. I now fear that I will have to get a new phone but which one. The problem is that my Nokia is so perfect for me, I've had it for nearly 4 years and does it all I need. I struggle to operate the screen and menu functions on modern phones and I DO NOT want an Iphone or Blackberry. I'm used to a long line of previous similar Nokia's but the current crop use the Windows not Symbian platform and are totally different. I'm assuming the only viable option is an Androis phone but there are tons of different ones.

So the criteria is;

Cheap - pay monthly preferably under £15 per month
Easy to use touch screen - my Nokia has a tap type that I like and is precise - you can use the end of a pen or finger nail
Good app support
No massive but similar screen size to my Nokia
Navigation with maps built in and GPS
Camera with flash
3G capability
Good music player

Sorry the list is endless, any suggestions I can then Google would be great.

Cheap as chips ... er, free + £7.50 per month.

Thanks DE, a good suggestion. Looks and reads as a much more expensive phone if you look at the features it has. Do all Android apps work on all versions of the OS?

I don't think you can beat the Nexus 4. Because it's sold by google it gets the android updates first. My nexus is on android 4.4, but my wife's samsung (bought at the same time) is still on 4.0.

Best option is to buy it outright, then use a cheap sim. At the moment I have a company phone, so I'm using ovivo for my own phone - there is an upfront fee of about £20, but the service is then completely free each month. (500 Mb, 300 texts, 250 mins).

Mostly but not all. You can go to the play store to see which version are supported.

I used to have a phone running Android 2.3, and found many of the newer apps weren't compatible.

"I don't think you can beat the Nexus 4."

The Nexus 4 has been superseded by the Nexus 5, again a very good phone.

The real bargain at the moment is the Motorola Moto G ~£110. Google the reviews.

Anyone use TalkTalk Mobile?

They do a Dora flip phone for £5 a month, 100 minutes and 250 texts which is all I need. Seems good value and I always liked flip phones.

I got my Orange plan re-sorted after weeks of the idiots telling me I HAD to move to EE.

I have gone sim free and pay £17.20 plus v.a.t. for two sims. Unlimited everything. Beat that.

SWMBO has the same deal as me. We do not need any fancy stuff just text and voice.
We are both on contracts that cost £0 and we just pay for calls/ text.
IIRC it was originally Virgin - we are on Orange/ EE/ T-Mobile or whatever this weeks name is.
We keep getting text from Orange saying we are on the best tariff so that's all right.:-)

I used the Virgin "equivalent" on Orange too. They must have lost money on that one! Left Orange due to general irritation to use GifffGaff. Have you tried them? They seem to undercut Orange and all the others. My modest usage only requires PAYG, and GiffGaff do seem to be OK on price and service via a forum of users.

Yes, I'm aware. I should have said that I mean for value for money. If you can find one left, that is - I last saw them at around £160.

Thanks DE, i got the Y300 today after reading the reviews. A a bit hasty perhaps but is proving well so far. I got it for £70, seems a good buy.

nice but dim - I've got one.

You asked if it can use all Android Apps. I've no idea, but apparently it has pretty much the latest OS which must help. Certainly I've downloaded all the Apps I might want with no problem.

Some say the internal memory is pretty poor and easily filled up. Not even knowing if I might get this issue, I got a 16Gb micro SD card and set* the default to use the SD card rather than the internal memory.

* I know nothing, but the web advice made it easy for me to do.

I also have it switched to 2G signal only and WiFi turned off. I only switch them on when I need them and the battery lasts for about 6 days (24/7 standby, calls, texts and a bit of internet included.) Unlike No.1 offspring's iPhone which barely survives a day without a charge.

May be a bit late now, but Ovivo is worth looking at. I have a spare phone using it. Yes, it is free.

Ovivomobile seconded for light use.

Four months ago we stumped the £20 required for a sim. We got back £15 call credit, so just a fiver down.

We still have the £15 yet to be touched, as all calls, data and texts since then have been free.

Have a look at Giff Gaff - runs on O2 network, but there are some good flexible deals.
