Toyota Corolla and Verso - 06 2.0 starter motor teeth - p/h pete

went to a local motor factors to collect a replacement starter motor, checked it before I left and it had 10 teeth the original starter had only 9 as it was the only starter listed on their computer they insisted it would fit and the teeth wouldn`t jam. I left it with them and bought a starter with 9 teeth from a different supplier. Is it possible that a 10 tooth starter will fit onto a starter ring designed for 9 teeth or were the pair behind the counter talking B/S and just trying to grab money.
