Following on from a few conversations;
Rattle on "Good ideas missed"
Pat on "Improving this Forum"
and a few others...
Good ideas depend on current gaps in supply.
Sadly there's no gap in Motoring Forums for us to fill. And if we wanted to we don;t have a differentiation to stand on.
But you know what there isn't? (as far as I know that is).
A forum for calmer people to hang out, ask questions, advise each other and generally do the entire electronic "Last of the Summer Wine". I feel that there is a gap there, although I haven't thought it through.
I don't think this forum could be promoted as a motoring forum with any great hope of success. But I do suspect that it could be promoted for people like us to hang out in. And there are loads of us.
Just saying....

"Slightly Grumpy Old Men, Women and Youngsters Welcome", would sum us up nicely and attract like minded souls.
|
should be called "the saloon bar"
The domain name is available.

A bunch of grumpy old men aged between 18 and 90 is what we are on here :).

Grumpy old men? Rich with life experiences and common sense.

Best hurry up. I get the feeling that number of posters is dwindling by the day.

GB seems to have resigned. Some bloke called "-" is squatting in his gaff

Can the mods contact those who have left or drifted away, and do some market research?
|

He changed ISP - never been heard of since.

Well, he will have done it himself, I assume, if he's done it at all. Surely nothing else, he didn't seem the sort to run away head in hands because someone was mean to him.
I've tried flouncing, it doesn't work very well. Its very difficult to convince everybody of your point when you can't speak. And as for lasting impressions, - fingers, buckets of water, holes, and all that.
|
>> very difficult to convince everybody of your point when you can't speak.
Always impossible, even when you can speak. No one understands anything usually.
|
A fair point.
Nobody is ever convinced of something new or different pertaining to something they already think they know about - or at least its extremely rare.
However, there is always the chance of being able to introduce a new, hitherto unknown, fact or perspective which can shift people's opinion, or at least bring a new slant to it.
But if you don't care enough to bang on about it, then why would you expect anybody else to care one way or the other?
|
>>> But if you don't care enough to bang on about it, then why would you expect anybody else to care one way or the other?
'Care'? Do me a favour FFS...
Either people understand stuff or they don't. Usually they don't.
Who cares? Not me. It's normal.

We are all guilty of not listening or understanding each other sometimes like living in a different dimension>:)
Come on Dog where are you, and Londoner nice to see you both back.
Old fashion Dutch saying(..Doe normaal dan doe je al gek genoeg).Just making things up.

Right here Dutchie.
(*_*)

Are we going to get the story of ' how not to change your ISP'?
Haven't seen L'es since he thought about changing his.

Loooong story bathtub but, I will tell all, when I get a roun tuit.

Welcome back, canine one!

Maybe GB just felt he had to dash.

It can happen after all. No doubt he'll be back soon, zipping up his flies.
I certainly hope so. He's good on machinery.

I really hate it when people say things like that. WTF has happened with gb, if anything? Has there been some sort of unmentionable event? Can't some mofo drop a subtle hint?
I come here, let it all hang out, and then when I ask for information it's like getting that stuff out of a whassername... Sheesh... Bunch of ponces...
|
Wrong end, wrong stick.
"GB seems to have resigned. Some bloke called "-" is squatting in his gaff"
"Maybe GB just felt he had to dash."
"Lets just draw a line under that, shall we."
They're called puns. Bad ones, I'll admit, but puns nonetheless.
Do try and keep your understanding more closely aligned with your keyboard availability.
|
>> They're called puns. Bad ones, I'll admit, but puns nonetheless.
Ah. Yes, pretty bad.
But I can only apologise for missing them. I tend to forget that I am not the only poster given to galumphing schoolboy facetiousness. Must try harder.
|
I'm not entirely sure what "galumphing" means but I like it and may well share in its usage. I hope that's ok.
Further, I wonder if the person who gave you a green thumb is squirming at all?
|
>> I wonder if the person who gave you a green thumb is squirming at all?
I hope not. I deserve far more of those than I get.
|
>>..."am parsimonious with green thumbs"
Reap / sow / etc.
|
>> Further, I wonder if the person who gave you a green thumb is squirming at

Ha ha, not at all.
I thought the 'bunch of ponces' sign off was very AC and I know he hates green thumbs.
|
Galumph = move in a clumsy, ponderous, or noisy manner.
|
"He took its head and left it dead and went galumphing back.
Oh frabjous day callooh, callay he chortled in his joy"
Great word galumphing almost as good as chortled, both of which invented ,I believe, by Lewis Caroll for his verse "Jabberwocky".
|
How spooky it is to read the Wikipedia entry on Lewis Carroll, as I just was, finish that, dive to this forum and click on new posts and be presented with Lewis Carroll.

Indeed. It's enough to get a wasp in your wig about.

Please explain the bit where we collectively jumped in a bathtub and careered down a hill. And in what respect we are going off on long bike rides to meet up with a lady of an age which is 'long past her best' ? I'm really interested in what your thinking is there :-)
You are utterly right about 'what there isn't' but I think it would be something contra the nature of the net - the minute it becomes popular, either the content becomes diluted or it needs lots of moderation. It woul be a nice place if it happened, so count me in when you get it sorted...
|
When Dave and I and some short bloke from Poole with a few others took on HJ's forum it was a basket case within the umbrella of a larger basket case facing rapid growth.
We proved that one can have a highly popular, exceptionally busy website and forum with no abuse, bad language or personal attacks. Just so long as the moderators aren't worried about being popular.
You just need the support of the majority.
I really think that the idea of an electronic home for a "Last of the Summer Wine" type forum has got some legs.
I need to think this through. Its not like I'm busy with anything else these days.

I fully understand your thinking Mark, but just how we go about it eludes me for now. Mind you it's been a busy day walking dogs and doing Country things, it wears one out somewhat. Watto!
|
One thing that slightly irks me about the forum is when people refer to another member by a personal name that is presumably unknown to the majority of other members. It can't help seeming a bit exclusive, especially to new members, who presumably we are trying to attract.
I'm not getting at MD (sorry) - I can see it's easily done if you happen to know someone anyway, or remember someone's name from another forum.
It reminds me of school, when friends first cautiously started using christian names, excluding those not in the magic circle who had to go on being called Fortescue iii or Binns minor.

IME it's mostly, admittedly in the manner of an 'in' joke, reference to people who've changed their username. No FM was previously Mark (place of residence). Similarly Z, who changes his forum name with his car, still gets called RF.
Most other people seem to be either Dave or Rob.
I think we had a 'What's Your Forename' thread in the early days.
FWIW I'm Simon.

Very good memory dear boy. Take no notice, there was nought in it.

And back in the RF days, when it was a take-off of the Renault ads on TV, he was Papa and Nicole was his daughter.
Now, it seems, Nicole is his wife!
Stands watching - that bloke!
;-)

The profile thingy lets you enter your real name if you want to.
|
I realise I've never actually looked up anyone's profile. I suppose I just assumed it was all lies anyway. Mine probably says good-looking, solvent, GSOH, WLTM attractive ...
or was that on another site?
|
Mind you, at least we get helpful answers to problems here. Over on t'other place someone wanted to know why his Honda CG125 wouldn't start. This is the gem he got among the replies -
"The bike has got some internal problem and that's why its not starting.Take the bike in the garage I recommend".
|
"Most other people seem to be either Dave or Rob. "
Not me! ;-)
I have to come to this site after a few glasses of red stuff to remind me of my name - not sure what the W is though - but I'm sure Z will have at least one suggestion!

In recent times, you can probably count regular posters on here on your fingers and toes. Maybe just fingers at times. Or am I being overly pessimistic?
But this website shouldn't be a forum alone - and no plans ever came forward for this 'business'. I would sign-up to the private discussions because you never know I might have an idea that made money :-)
So this site is slowly decreasing in members I guess.... not done too bad so far. How about the business ideas are discussed? Or if no future then we can plan an alternative discussion forum that does not simply vanish with no notice.
|
I am vaguely of the view that fora are disappearing. They have been replaced by Facebook, Twitter, and various blogs. There's a limit to the time one spends on the 'net, 'chatting'.
Oddly though, mumsnet has thrived.

>>>Oddly though, mumsnet has thrived.
Almost entirely down to Stu I think.

BBD might claim some credit too.

I'm finding that too. Forums catering for my own interests are well down on traffic compared to five years ago and finding a motorcycle forum that gets more than a handful of posts a day is one hell of a job.
|
Out of curiosity, how many people on here are on Pistonheads? It is obviously primarily a motoring forum but within that there are all sorts of sections including regional forums where you can ask a lot of the random type questions you get in here.
A quick look shows about 140 threads / thread updates today alone in their General Gassing section.
Would be interesting to see who looks into both forums, what does C4P give that PH doesn't etc?
Might highlight a niche / area for C4P to concentrate on?
|
I'm a member of PH & found it DULL!
|
>> Out of curiosity, how many people on here are on Pistonheads?
Me.
I am also on the PH Board. (a private part of the PH forum not available to mere mortals lol)
|
I look into PH now and then. Find it equivalent to the comments on the Daily Mail pages. I suppose they've nothing else to do when Jeremy Kyle finishes.
Yes I do watch JK every now and then, but I wonder who in their right mind would ever appear on it.
|

Car salesman's thread? Pity that got hidden away I found it one of the best threads on there.
Yes I look on there every now and again, but never got round to registering. I look less and less these days. The NPE forum is depressing. Readers cars is a good one. Problem with PH is there are too many dullards who seem to what to put down others too often, threads turn into slanging matches too quickly. Although I agree it's very popular, impossible to keep up with the latest threads there are so many posts going up every minute. I think a victim of it's own success.
Any more news on the my drive bit on here?
|
I've only ever eavesdropped when it's come up in a Google search looking for a particular subject.
My impression is that it is a curious mix of Motorists' Liberation Front activists and some bewildered would-be DIYers asking questions like "Which end of a spanner is which?"

No.
Its PH'ers who have been asked to join a select group, and give ideas and opinions on how the site should be developed - similar to something on here a few months ago if I remember correctly.

This is shameless thread-drft, but it seems as good a place as any to mention it:
Did anyone else notice the way an old thread called "Old jokes are the best" suddenly reappeared, and then just as suddenly vanished?
It stayed long enough for Dog to contribute a rather good one. I was just going to comment that another joke was neither old nor good, but when I tried to post, the thread had gone.
Not locked, just vaporised, as if it never was.
|
That's odd, I noticed a post with no user name at the top, just a dash in the place it should be.
Could it be gremlins at work?

Funny ole life though :)

I'll let you (all) be the judge of that:
If Scotland gains its independence after the forthcoming referendum,
The remainder of the United Kingdom will be known as the Former United Kingdom.
In a bid to discourage the Scots from voting 'Yes' in the referendum, Lib.Dems have now begun a campaign with the slogan: "Please Vote 'No' For **** Sake!" They feel the Scottish people can relate to this,
particularly those of Glaswegian origin!!

If the joke is deemed offensive and the post deleted, this means the last post to the thread is much older. Therefore when rendering the HTML for the top level page, the post would no longer appear because it has not been updated in a long time.
I suspect someone thinks this is not an appropriate 'joke' and deleted/hid the item and hence the thread dropping down the list of threads.

I removed it, so blame me this time. I've since edited Dog's 2nd posting of it.
rtj70's comments explain it well enough.
