Question for Mike H or any of our european members - borasport
We are heading from Zillertal to Boppard tomorrow - any route advice ? We came down via Koln/frankfurt/wurzburg/augsburg/munich - that was on a friday/saturday and the northbound traffic looked horrendous in places
Our native contact advised avoiding Nuremburg and using the A8 as it was 'new road, very fast', which it may be when they finish the roadworks, but seemed like 50 miles of contraflow to me
And I've not come to terms with the new cars' built in sat-nav yet. Two or three times on the way down it took us off the motorway to avoid congestion, only to put us back on 5 minutes behind where we were. Passed the same lorryload of New Holland tractors at least four times

The A8 has been "under construction" for what seems like the last ten years. No idea what it's like but will put you on the A61 to your destination via the A5.

A9 and A3 (the way you came down) is either OK or a car park. I used this road frequently 2001-2003 between Munich and Frankfurt, travel times varied between 2 and 7 hours.

The A8 gives you options up to the A6 and over if it gets sticky. The A3 is it.

Personally I would use the A8. Many of the roadworks have been finished, but they are upgrading it in sections so there will be contraflows for some time (2-3 years). Too much of the A3 is still two lanes, and it's a drag with all the lorries that use it. The traffic is usually heavy around Stuttgart and Pforzheim. You could take the A9 to Nürnberg, then cut across the A6. We used the A6 in May and it wasn't too bad. I suspect that most of the traffic will be heading south on Saturday. Another tip: take the Achenpass road past the Achensee, you might think the motorway via Rosenheim will be quicker but the A93/A8 junction at Rosenheim can clag badly, as can the A12 past Kufstein.

TBH, it's a Saturday, it's holiday season, it's not going to be any fun whichever way you go!

Cheers
Achensee pass it was, Munich wasn't too bad and little problem on the A8 either
Back to 15° and fog on the M62 !
