US road trip: anyone driven north from San Fran? - Auntie Lockbrakes
Has anyone here ever toured Oregon and Northern California by road?

I'm looking in to driving the 800-odd miles from San Francisco up to Seattle, over 4 days, at the end of August. Much worth seeing? Am I taking on too much in 4 days? Cheers,

Only into Marin County, not far. And it was a long time ago.

It's really beautiful round there. You can see why the pioneers kept heading West. They could feel there was something good over there if they could only get there.

With a bit of luck Nick there will be some fallout from the famous dope fields in Canada over the border which have put the Gringo consumers and former Mexican suppliers to shame.. Yee-hah!

I lived in San Fran and B-i-L in Seattle so I've done it a couple of times, although last time was about 10 yrs ago.

This might help...

Not suggesting you'd do it with them, but perhaps it helps give some idea.

I've only driven as far up the coast as Mendocino, which is a real nice place. We had planned to go further, but were distracted by Sausalito and a helicopter trip over SF(after only 5 miles!) and a few days in Point Reyes National Seashore, which we revisited last Nov.
It really is too nice to rush IMHO. Plenty of cheap flights between the two, and Alaskan Airlines are a fun bunch..i use their Portland/Sacramento connection. Spend the time you save by flying on a 4 day leisurely drive taking in sights between Pt Reyes & Monterey. And if you do, be sure to read Cannery Row first.

For me, the giant redwoods were the most impressive sight, followed by some magnificent sunsets over the Pacific. If you are lucky, the drive will be fog free but don't count on it. I did the coast road many years ago but took a bit longer than 4 days since I was on a pedal bike rather than driving.

We did Seattle to San Francisco over six days following Route 101
Didn't go on I5 at all.

There were some highlights in the top left corner of Washington. Hurricane Ridge, Crescent Lake but many hours of driving through trees with no other view at all. A local we met had advised against driving that way.

Oregon. Two night in a beach front appartment in Cannon Beach, a nice seaside town. just down the road from Seaside, a not so nice seaside town. Good food in Depot Bay. Sea Lion Caves smelly but good.
If you are going up I5, Multnomah Falls is worth a visit.

Had a couple of great days on San Juan Island North of Seattle. Killer Whale watching was fantastic.
We didn't visit Seattle at all other than flying into the Airport.
