Hi All,
I'm thinking about changing my car in the near future. I have got a list of a few cars which are possibilities but was wondering whether any of you guys may be able to suggest something else.
... my budget is about £8-9k.
... I'm looking for something which is Golf/Focus sized
... preferably diesel
... needs to be stylish (i.e. I'm not going to go and buy a Nissan Note/Micra or Panda etc!)
... up to about 3 years old (if thats possible with my budget)
I'm really tempted by a MK5 Golf, but the interiors pretty dull unless you go for the ones which have got dual zone climate control and everything else.
Same problem with Foci as well.
Also thought about a Mazda 3.
Anyone got any other suggestions?

well you have the best 3 there already, for your requirement, so buy the golf
otherwise there is the Leon, the Octavia and the A3. All offering a diff comprimise of style, value, age etc
bmw 1 might work as an outsider or Alfa GT

There's an Auris 2.2 litre (I think) diesel that is very rapid, comfortable over speed bumps and of cours fairly economical. HJ called it a hot hatch for adults. I'd be tempted to look at one at least.

And what is wrong with a Nissan Note?
They are pretty good and look good also.

Has anyone driven the Golf with the 2.0TDI (140) in? What did you think of it?
Cheers for the other suggestions, will have a gander at an Auris this weekend. Tempted by a 1 Series now as well!

My last car was a Golf estate with this engine, and it did over 30,000 miles without missing a beat. But my current Octavia with the common-rail 170 TDi is even better.
Think carefully whether your annual mileage justifies a diesel: modern diesel engines are fitted with various extra components to makwe them smoother and greener, and these can go catastrophically wrong, usualy just outside the 3-year warranty period.
I'd say unless you're going to do more than 15,000 milea a year, go for a petrol. If image is important, the front-runners will be the Audi A3, BMW 1-series and the Mercedes A-class, followed quite closely by the Golf. The new-shape Honda Civic is 'different' but make sure you can live with the appalling rear visiblity which borders on the dangerous.

So do I Espada. I think a Note would be ideal for my wife. She disagrees and wants a Qashqai / Rav type thing. Those are much more expensive. Grrrr.

From your list I would take the Golf. If driving enjoyment is high up the list but interior space not, then the BMW 1 Series. Apart from the very earliest ones they really are very good.
