The Westpig entourage are travelling from Devon to Scotland soon, to visit rellies and have a week's break.
I intend to leave at 0400 on a Sat (to miss the worst bits of the M6 before it gets busy) and will do the 582 miles in one hit (apart from fuel and grub stops).
Can anyone recommend a decent cafe, off the motorway but well near it, say between junctions 34 (Lancaster) and 37 (Kendal)?
I reckon i'll be hungry enough by then to consider eating my hand and want a decent breakfast for a fair price, not an extortionate bill for a bland, semi-cold offering, then find you need to queue again or have a row, because you've somehow missed the brown sauce sachets until too late.
Not too rough a place, please, I don't want any lorry drivers frightening the children and a caravan in a layby with no facilities won't do it for her ladyship...;-)

How about this - only stayed one night but had a good evening meal and huge breakfast for very reasonable price. gb or harleyman may well have more detailed opinion.
Hundreds of trucks there but also quite a few non-truckers when I stayed.

Tebay is only a bit further north. One of the very few parts of UK where the M/way services are OK.

Seconded Bromp. Although I want to say they've changed the name of Tebay services to Westmorland. Still good though, family owned. I've never tried this place but people say it's worth stopping. Just off J40. rheged.com/

You know, they might be right. Cafe looks ok though. I was also going to suggest the Pooley Bridge Inn but I suspect they only do breakfast for residents and probably not after 10.00ish dunno...might be worth checking.

My part of the world.
Try calling the Crooklands Hotel just off J36 to see if they serve non residents.We have our LDWA AGM there and it is a nice spot.
Abot qtr mile E of J36 down the A65 is a nice cafe whose name escapes me. Will ask in the pub tomorrow and post later.
Too far I know but Im 30 mins down the A65 and would happily cook up blueberry pancakes and maple syrup all round.
Plenty of options in Kirkby Lonsdale, about 10 mins off J36.

Quite right Humph...neither have I or my chums, so we go on the chara from Settle for our occasional afternoon soirees taking light refreshment. Starting at the Orange Tree and finishing somewhere else via a circuitous route. hic.

Tempting...but...we need transport the other end.....and need to lug a 16 month old baby and paraphernalia...plus a 5 year old....and the adults wellies/walking boots...etc
So the trusty old estate car it is.
We usually take the two dogs as well, but this year they're staying home, one isn't well (brother and sister English Springer Spaniels, 12.5 years old). My sister will be looking after them.

Whilst in no way knocking Wetherspoons in Lancaster, the traffic in Lanc is always bad, even if you are aware of the rat runs.
Tebay services are fine, as are the other options mentioned here.
Some cracking pubs in Lanc. We were drinking there last Sunday, courtesy of some cheapo N Rail family & friends tickets.

We do this bit of the M6 regularly and always stop for lunch here.
Come off at junction 35 to the A6. Head North to Milnthorpe. The first ' shop ' on the right past the village sign is ' Bob Parrott Outdoor Wear ', Corner of The Ashes/A6 on Google Earth.
They have an excellent little cafe, all fresh and cooked on the spot. Very good selection of walking gear as well. Open from 0930.
You can take a wee break from the motorway by continuing North on the A6 and coming back on the M6 at gate 36 with hardly any extra mileage. Have a good break.

We called in on Friday for lunch, on our way to friends for the weekend. They are closing the cafe due to Parrotts wanting more sales space.
The girls are re-opening in Arnside, by the chip shop. Only a short diversion off the A6, turning left at the lights in Milnthorpe ( heading North )

Another vote for Westmorland services - after travelling from Devon I wouldn't want to be hunting off-motorway for somewhere I didn't know. Friendly service and good food.
And you can get some nice stuff in the farm shop there if you want to bring something for your hosts.

Well.....we left Devon at 0300 and made exceptionally good time....so much so Ted's suggestion went out the window as we would have been miles too early.
I decided on Truckhaven....but......somewhere along the line made a boo-boo and went in to a Moto at the beginning of the Lake District (I'd seen the sign for Truckhaven, but then pulled off on auto pilot, into the wrong one....must be my age...50 today).
It was awful.. The place was run down. Food was acceptable..but the PRICE????
HELL....I knew it wouldn't be cheap....but...£26 for two average sized cooked breakfasts with drinks and some toast for the kids???
Trouble is when you've just driven for 4 hours and have another 5 to go, you want a quick turn around, so they've got you by the wotsits, haven't they.

sounds like burton-in-kendal - last stop before the lake district and usually full of coachloads of tourists - a horrible place
another half an hour and you could have stopped at tebay... :-)

Tebay is the only MSA that I will use for anything more than a rapid toilet stop and that is not one of my two hour spaced break locations.
