Compressing video for YouTube. - R.P.
I have a Gigabite clip that I want to upload - what's the best way to compress it into something that won't take all day to upload ? .mov format btw.

I wouldn't bother putting it in iMovie if all you want to do is re-encode it for YouTube. Presumably you are looking to reduce the bit rate and/or change the resolution.

First thing I would try is Handbrake. It's fairly efficient and will use multiple CPU cores if they are available - it's pretty fast on my hyper threaded Core i7 2600K.

You've not said what format it's in at the moment or what resolution or bit rate. Remember a lot of the so called file types (e.g. avi) are containers for a movie stream. An AVI file could be MPEG4 or any number of other formats.

If you do use Handbrake (which is free), I'd use the FFMPEG Coder - it's faster and you'll not notice the quality difference. Doing two passes can keep quality up and the file size down.

Thanks - uploaded a lot quicker from iMovie - heard of Hanbrake before Rob - will have a fiddle with it later.

Whilst we're on the subject what would be recommended for downloading Youtube clips for me to use for work related purposes and link into Powerpoint.

On the mac? I use this

itunes.apple.com/us/app/screen-capture-tool-lite/id528964923?mt=12

The free version gives you 1 minute of capture, the paid for one is unlimited.

But there are plenty of others - google is your friend.

I use DivX...at least I think I do, it all seems to happen without me doing anything much to it!

I use Realplayer Downloader on the Mac, it's free and seems to harvest any length of video off of the internet and enables you to convert it to any format you want.
