Yesterday Waitrose were offering gift tags, reduced from £1 a pack to 15p a pack. However they also showed the original promotion of buy 3 and get £1 off your shopping. Bought 3 packs and checked the receipt at home. Paid 45p and had £1 taken off the bill total. Effectively they paid us 55p to remove stock from the shop.

It will balance out when you buy their expensive and tasty stuffed olives, for example. I am rather a fan of Sainsbury's price match; I bought a bottle of gin and got a £6.21 voucher, to spend in Sainsburys I admit, because the same gin was £6.21 cheaper in ASDA. I went back the next day and bought 6 more, one at a time as the price match limit is £10 per transaction. That gave me enough to buy a decent free range turkey for the festive meal. Swings and roundabouts I guess!

And those losses will be set against their taxable profits. I wouldnt loose any sleep.

This happens more often than you realise, especially with discounted items!
The linksave promotion is loaded onto the price file with a start and end date but instead of it being set up as buy 2 save x (x being the current price) it is set up as buy 2, save y (where y was the price at the start of the promotion).
Thus you get the deal like the OP.
Was even better deal when you could use your staff discount card against it

Its called marketing.
And by the look of this thread, is working just fine.
|
And the deals are often subsidised by the supplier (manufacturer) not the retailer.

Waitrose?
For rich Southerners and Northerners with more money than sense..
Home Bargains are cheaper than almost anyone..

The evil eye of jealousy, such an unattractive trait in one so old.

In my town Waitrose gets (customers) free parking in the town centre, it gets you a car park with gentle drivers who respect pedestrians - which we certainly don't get in Sainsburys or Tesco's - it gets you a scan-your-own-shopping system which works, is fast and stress free, and staff who know their stuff, are helpful, polite and friendly. Money isn't everything - quality of life matters.

Amen to that.
And I will absolutely pay for quality of service.

And indeed their standard groceries are price matched against Tesco. I'm certain it's true because they say so on the shelf.

I thought what it atually said is they match the Tesco price for branded items. So own label products are not price matched - too difficult to compare like for like. It's worth taking a look at your trolley next time you shop to see what proportion of your purchases are branded vs own label... IMO you're paying for the service, shopping environment and the variety of products available, and it's money we'll spent!
