Printer has 5 ink cartridges, 2 black and 3 colours and they are all full enough. I was printing envelopes this morning and slipped and jammed in the printer, I got it out, smeared with black ink and since then I cannot print in Black. I have done test page, print head normal and deep cleaning and nozzle alignment, to no effect.
A friend has suggested deleting the printer and then reload the software, which I haven't tried yet. Any other ideas please? I am not totally stuck as I can print in colour but obviously I'd like the black back, in the long term!

Perhaps, but try fully turning off the printer - no mains for at least 5 mins. While that is happening, visit the printer settings in the control panel on the PC and make sure there are no pending jobs. Delete them if there are.
Then reboot PC as well.
I've lost count of the things I've reinstalled due to errors, only to have the errored 'preferences' or settings kept. Got over them all in the end but several naughty words were said!

Is the black cartridge in properly after removing the jammed envelope? Is there a separate print head per colour too?
If I am reading what you are saying, the envelope was covered in black ink - probably dragged under the print head and hence the ink on it. But you can print with other colours coming out okay? If so it's related to the blank cartridge and/or print head. If the cartridge isn't seated properly ink probably won't flow.
Don't try printing before I check this as a print head without ink can overheat.

Many thanks to both you gentlemen. The power off for 5 minutes and re start computer plus uninstall/reinstall software has fixed it for me. Don't know which ONE did it but one of three did! I have had laptop problems too and a friend told me power off, battery out and give it 5 minutes - that worked too! Happy Christmas

Merry Christmas to you too. I would wager it was turning the printer off for 5 minutes that fixed it if it was only black not working. Whatever it was, don't jam envelopes in it again and you should be fine :-)
