Buying a car in Italy to ship home (anyone done?) - mattbod
Hello guys I know I have not been on in a while but life has taken over etc. Anyway I know there are some wise and knowledgeable people on here so I want to ask some advice. I have always fancied an Alfasud. I know I am nuts but I love them and there are some decent cars for sale in Italy down south where they don't suffer the perils of rust. However Italy being Italy, I hear buying a used car is a real headache and one cannot buy unless you are resident in the country. Well at least this is one version I have heard. The other is that you can buy but will not be able to drive it back as you will not be able to transfer the registration in Italy (unless the owner allows you to keep the vehicle in his name until you get home and send the plates back). It sounds a nightmare. Anyone have any knowledge or experience?

Wonderful car in its time, but can't you find something here with the steering wheel on the correct side?

Info from 2010 says

To register a car in Italy, you must be a resident of Italy. However, to buy a car in Italy for exporting it abroad, you don't need to be a resident.

If the owner of the car agrees to sell the car to you regardless of the fact that you are a non-resident, he can go with you to a "notaio" and get a notarized bill of sale which will allow you to be the owner of the car, and allow him to de-register the car. But you will either have him remove the license plates from the car (and then you will have to ship it to the UK by truck or other ways) or get him to trust you enough to let you drive the car all the way to the UK and then mail him the plates and original registration documents once you got your registration from the DVLA.

Good luck with that...

From a private sale or a trade sale?

That all sounds about right. If you are wanting to drive it back can you not register it here with the DVLA, get UK plates made and take them with you?

A notaio is like a solicitor, I know you need one to buy a house didnt know you needed one to buy a car! Where in S Italy is it?

Thanks guys: and PR there is the rub. All the lovely original cars have been sold. Reason I posted this is that there are some lovely rot free cars for sale on Southern Italy and Sicily and it would be far easier to get a good condition car out there. However they are not cheap, I am told the transfer of ownership costs a whopping £500 or so plus the customs and getting the car MOT'd : it is probably not worth the hassle. Alfasuds and the UK do not mix and I would really like a classic early 1.2 or 1.3.

Lots of lovely cars here in fantastic condition from the looks of things.

I speak a bit of the lingo and can get by in Italy but really the bureaucracy has to bee seen to believed.

Tell me about it! We have a place over there and we have a knackered old second hand Merc A class, though we bought that with an Italian address so didnt have the hassle!

Some nice #suds in there!

I don't know if there is a similar system in Italy, but in Germany you can get a temporary 5-day registration to put the car on the road which includes insurance (not sure whether it's third party or fully comp) and plates for around €120. You can drive the vehicle for 5 days, quite enough time to get back to the UK. Might be worth pursuing?

Thanks PR and mike. I am going to go on the Italian alfa forum and ask a few questions. I very much doubt the Italians are anything like as efficient as the Germans as red tape keeps people in jobs :P

I live in Germany and believe me red tape was invented in this country even needed a passport to get a sim card.
