Over the last few weeks, the price of petrol at our local Total petrol station has fallen four pence per litre. Has this sort of reduction been nationwide?
|
Yes: Brent crude has been falling..
Expect oil prices to fall in the next 5 years as US shale oil production rises - to become the largest oil producer in the world - (some claim).
|
Keep quiet about it before they hear you.
|
not in my neck of the woods.
Diesel is still £1.40 a litre here and has been for a while.
Maybe thats a good thing as diesel used to yo yo around this time of year.
|
Diesel 139.9 at Sainsbury's Northampton, down from 142.9 a couple of weeks ago.
137.9 at Fosse Park Leicester when I filled up on Sunday.
|
Still not blinking cheap mind !
:-(

>> Still not blinking cheap mind !
I can't imagine a man of your means being concerned about the price of petrol!
|
In my experience "means" can be a disappointingly transitory matter...
:-)
|
Texaco premium unleaded was 132.9 litre in the depth of Kent last Sunday. I did a splash and dash.
|
Esso stations always seem to be the cheapest in the Medway Towns, currently around £1.32 for unleaded with BP sites being the most expensive Shell somewhere in between.

1.33 around these parts Shell as xcheap as the supermarkets

>> 1.33 around these parts Shell as xcheap as the supermarkets
Interesting observation RP. The local Total station was re-branded as Shell a month or so ago and has since been matching Sainsburys.
Still 2p/litre more than in Leicester though. PLay fuel light bingo when due to visit rellies near Fosse Park.
|
Tesco ordinary unleaded at 1.38 in Cambridge last night. Not much sign of a reduction there.
|
Shell price match Morrisons in Stoke.. or the nearest supermarket.
Sainsbury's are the new kid on the block with aggressive price cutting here... UK 133.9p/l.
Shell Congleton (4 miles) 134.9p.

Esso in Oakham town (opposite Wilkos), today 131.9
|
Paid 131.7p from ASDA yesterday, that very evening my local Tesco/Esso put it down to 132.9p.
Is the short term trend that it will fall further or will it start going up?
|
Eh?
Have you tried going back and asking if you can pay the new price instead? You might get a surprise.

I can remember when it was about 30p a GALLON. I think the trend is up. :-)
|
I can remember 4 gallons for £1 and stuff called Cleveland Discol!
|
Spanish prices usually parallel UK on a euro=GBP basis. Two weeks ago 95 octane topped out at about €1.48 per litre, today €1.345.

I drive home past a couple of supermarkets and a Shell station. The Shell station had a refit a couple of months back and since then has been the same price as the Asda down the road.
Its now 137.9 for diesel and I need to fill up tomorrow.
May be complete fantasy, but I'm sure I'm getting more MPG when I fill up at Shell compared to the supermarket stuff

My experience too. Shell has always been my fuel of choice, whether petrol or diesel. Now a Shell station has opened within reasonable distance of my house, I have no reason to go elsewhere.
I won't put supermarket fuel in ever since the issues with Tesco fuel causing breakdowns. I know all fuels come from the same base stocks, but if the actual delivered fuel coming from the pump nozzle really were the same as the branded stuff, this couldn't have happened. The BMW hasn't seen a drop of supermarket diesel from new.
|

2/3 miles away from my home the petrol produced is a std 95 octane - BP/Esso/Shell etc all fill up @ Ineos. Just as the BP tanker is being filled the "BP additives" are mixed in, likewise Shell/Esso etc...............so yes all petrols are from the same base but different additives.
Shell V-power comes from Stanlow only and is made by a completely different process than the regular 95 Octane Shell. V-power is not additives it's a new product.

I must admit that since our Aussie Golf requests 98 RON I've run it exclusively on shell V-Power (my nearest petrol station happens to be Shell and takes supermarket discount vouchers). I've read claims that V-Power improves fuel economy to the extent that it justifies the price premium and whilst I can't confirm this we're generally getting 40+mpg (even 50mpg on a run) from a 160PS car so I'm not complaining.
Petrol is, however considerably cheaper here although locals complain it has increased in cost somewhat since their carbon tax was implemented- doesn't seem to stop 4.0L cars and V6/V8 4x4s (and weird utes) being popular though.
IIRC, when I tried V-Power diesel in my 330d whilst in the UK the economy benefits were marginal. From memory Shell and Sainsbury's 'normal' diesel gave the best results whilst Morrisons was possibly the worst.

4 shillings and sixpence a gallon is the lowest I can remember from my childhood.
Cleveland Discol was a petrol ethanol mix. E something or other before its time.
|
The cheapest petrol I have used was in the USA in the early 70s, 22 cents a (US) gallon. Still glad it was on expenses, the five litre V8 I was using must have had a fuel pump the size of a Panda engine. Nothing to do with the way it was driven of course. ;)
|
Nov 1966, my first car, 4/8p 23.5p per gallon for 4star.
Cheapest petrol bought?
US gallon in Saudi Arabia i.e 10 riyals (10.8 riyals= £1.00 in 1970) for 10 US gallons (40 litres) = 2.25p /litre
Saudi Petrol was Regular 85 Octane, Premium 91...I did not bother with the expense and bought premium every time.
So for under £2.00 you could buy 200 King Size and fill the tank of a family car!

That sounds like an explosive and unhealthy combination FB :)

Petrol still contains ethanol. www.groups.tr-register.co.uk/wessex/ethanol-update.html
|
>> 4 shillings and sixpence a gallon is the lowest I can remember from my childhood.
I can remember as far back as the late 70s - mum asking the pump attendant at the local Murco to put £1 worth of 4-star in the Zephyr. It was my job to open the "locking" fuel cap... i.e. open the boot and unscrew the nut from the bolt holding the fuel flap closed :)
When my own driving career began a completely empty Cavalier Mk2 would just about take £20 to fill up, they had a big tank too.
|
I had a scrambler in the early 80s - £1.60 to fill the tank (was around £1.50/gallon iirc)
|

I'm not too concerned about petrol prices myself as the mileage I cover is minimal. However, for what it's worth, I paid 133.9 for unleaded at Tesco this afternoon.
|
ASDA are 131.7p here too although like you not really fussed about small variations in the price. I regularly spend more on coffee each month than I do fuel!
|

I tried that, but the car would never start.
|
In plymouth where i live the texaco down the road was £1.30.9 and diesel was £1.39.9, this afternoon.
I wouldn't know if my car or van would run better on shell v power because we dont have any shell stations. Here its either texaco,or supermarkets, used to have quit a few jets up to a year ago but they are either murco or harvest now, and we only have one bp and thats 10 miles from me so i dont bother.
|
Anyone here remember when it was 9d a gallon in 1896?

When they've finished rearranging the middle east maybe they'll classify all the regions oil as their own, so yes indeed, no Foreign oil...;)
|
local Asda 1.317 yesterday, but I always pay a few pence extra for Shell. Smoother running probably psychosomatic. With the odd half tank of V Power when the low level warning light comes on.
Totally irrelevant when I stay for an extra three pints in the pub.
|
£1.359 per litre for bog standard unleaded, at our local Sainsbury's. Matched (!) by Tesco, Jet, Shell and all the other usual suspects.
Cartel?
What cartel?
|
My local Shell indi' £1.319. Chester Road Streetly West Mids.
|
Swindon Esso 131.9 / 132.9 / 133.9 for unleaded - all within a short distance of one another (Kingshill Road, Rodbourne Road, A420 South Marston)
Swindon Tesco 132.9 for unleaded.
Abingdon Tesco, and Didcot Tesco 135.9 for unleaded.
Abingdon Esso 135.9 for unleaded.
Oxford Tesco 134.9 for unleaded.
Seems the South West prices for fuel are still cheaper than the south East.

Asda Reading 131.9 for unleaded, Vx. Always cheaper here than the surrounding towns.
|
142.9 for diesel at Tesco, more expensive than the BP garage down the road!
|
138.9 for diesel at the Shell garage at Hanworth on the A316.
|
Local Shell diesel back to 140.9 this morn. Penny margin over Sainsbury.

Article in DT states that the wholesale price has fallen from 54p to 45p per litre.
The punter has seen a reduction of about 4p....that is 3.3p less for petrol/diesel and 0.7p VAT.
Surely we are due further drops! I am sure if the prices were rising the prices would have gone up immediately.
|
>>I am sure if the prices were rising the
>> prices would have gone up immediately.
>>
www.ukpia.com/files/pdf/ukpia-briefing-paper-understanding-pump-price.pdf
chart on page 2 shows that:
Sometimes the retail price rise lags the wholesale price, and similarly for price drops.
Sometimes the retail price drops even though the wholesale price is static or rising.
Sometimes the retail price rises even though the wholesale price is static or dropping.
In the long run, the two trends tend to stablilise.
Note that www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/sep/05/oft-high-petrol-prices-oil says
"The Office of Fair Trading has launched a review into whether reductions in the price of crude oil are being passed on to motorists. .... ..... The OFT said it would gather information over the next six weeks and planned to publish its findings in January."
|
Isn't there a 3p duty rise around the corner? The more cynical among us might posit that the price is currently being manipulated downwards in order to make the duty rise less visible.
|
>> Isn't there a 3p duty rise around the corner?
IIRC it's been postponed again until April 2013.
|
>>IIRC it's been postponed again until April 2013.
Not yet... motion was voted down in HoC earlier in the week. Still time for GO to announce it in his Autumn Statement (which is not till mid Dec....). 3p on duty, plus 0.6p VAT, so pump price up 4p I imagine if it comes in.
