Anyone good with asian pottery identification? - Stuu
I have inherited a plate from my great grandmother which has been in the family for about 100 years or so ( amongst other things! ). I think the mark is maybe chinese but I havent a clue about these things. My great grandmother gave one away in a jumble sale 30 years ago and was chastised by someone for this because they thought it was rather valuable, but she didnt care for it so it went.

Anyone have any expertise on this kind of thing?

I reckon you have there an original of our very own VxFan himself, on one of his better days.

Worth anything? I doubt it.

PS I've never met him so this is a bluff... :-)

Antique Chinese pottery should have reign marks underneath, characters which show during which dynasty, and within that which reign, the item was produced. You obviously then need and expert, or a book of marks (found in good reference libraries) to interpret them.

There are very many forgeries however, partly from criminal intent but often homage to a particularly good mark. Hence here is far more "Ming" pottery than was ever produced in that period. In the same way, I often came across slashing knives and the like stamped "Sheffield Steel" in the East when the only connection with that city was perhaps the origin of the discarded vechicle springs from which the items were forged by some village blacksmith. Rather than brand piracy, this was more a way of saying "Top Quality".

It is the spitting image of our village barber and cesspit pumping specialist too.

As said above with this type of pottery there are 999 copies for every genuine one.

Take it to your local auction house who will express an opinion.

You're in Northamptonshire? Try JP Humbert in Towcester.
