I remember at the age of ten our headmaster writing the following sentence on the board and telling us it would make sense if we put punctuation in the right places. Shows how important they can be.

Let me get this right now...

Smith where Jones had had had had had had had had had had had was correct.

Get on then, tell us.

all that shows is how to write clearly and simply.

Surely it's just as easy to copy & paste, especially if you're not quoting the entire message.

It may be.

its easier to quote all the message and cut out what you dont want.

You're splitting hairs.

I always use the 'quote' button - I can't be bothered having to make a decision whether copy/paste might be easier or not. Anyway, the point is that there appears to be a bug in the site software.

Believe it or not the fix involved removing a .. er um .. comma.

Thanks to l'escargot for having eyes on stalks to find it.

Did you manage to take a look at the problem I mentioned to you yesterday?
Quote original message, and commas disappear - car4play
No unfortunately, but nothing has changed in the last couple of weeks, so can't think why it should do that now.
Anyway, we would want to revisit all that when we do the next set of updates to this site.

I forgot to mention I first noticed it a little while ago.

.. if only the country could be fixed so easily. (Oh no let's not get started on that one here!)

you cant foist commas on us like this without a clear mandate.

But he is only returning the commas which were ours in the first place...

we want change.

Yes. A valuable lesson for a ten year old.

Smith, where Jones had had "had had" had had "had had had". "Had had" was correct.

thats meaningless.

I like that sort of thing. One of the funniest single-picture cartoons I've seen was of a ballet dancer at a launch of OS2/2, with someone saying to her "I used to have an OS2/2 tutu too". Well it made me laugh.

Is Comma the Motoring link?

er!

That's pretty good. :)

I'm reminded of the sheepdog that belongs to that bloke who runs a chandlers and food emporium where you can pawn things in a little Cumbrian town.

You know, the Shap ship and chip chop shop chap's Shep.

...I like this sort of thing...

The farmer's planting seeds, and his wife is mending his clothes.

They are both... 'sowing', or should that be 'sewing'?

The correct answer, I believe, is the former because that is the first and therefore dominant clause in the original sentence.

The more realisitic answer is to write around it.

Quote original message, and commas disappear - Crankcase
A puzzle like that can grammatically be a right sow and sew.

And the award for today's most pithy response goes to...Crankcase.

Quote original message, and commas disappear - Crankcase
No, no, it's Zero that always takes the pith.
