Dishwasher that will not wash! - mikeyb
Dishwasher has stopped washing :-(

it fills with water and thinks it has performed a wash cycle, but the water doesn't get pumped up to the wash arms.

When it gets to the end of the cycle it empties as normal, but nothing is washed

My first thought was the pump, but that appears to be able to empty the machine no problem, and sound like its trying to pump during the wash cycle.

I've tried the obvious like cleaning all the filters, arms and can blow air through them with no resistance.

Any suggestions?

Well................this one is only 15 months old, and a replacement for a 10 year old one, so I'm not keen to just replace it.

Its out of warranty, and I am tempted to try for a good will visit, but I don't want them to find MrsB has done something daft and end up paying!

Check your water pressure (is the isolating valve turned nearly closed?)

Done that. It fills with water OK, then heats it, but it's not getting to the wash arms, although the pump can still empty the washer at the end of the cycle.

Sure the washer arms can actually rotate when the door is shut? No items (e.g. cutlery) protruding down from the trays?

Otherwise I might suspect the pump, which might have enough oomph to empty the machine, but maybe not enough to power the arms.

I thought that these days consumer goods had a minimum 2 year warranty as stipulated by the EU, bless 'em. Anything purchased after April 2005 IIRC.

Although most manufacturers play it down and try to wriggle out of it. Apple had a big spat with the EU on this one and lost.

Apparently it is NOT law. I listened to a prog' recently on the subject, may have been radio 4 can't remember, but they also suggested (I think) something along the lines of a court would likely find for the consumer on such an item. One cannot be expected to cough up for one of these every year.

As someone above suggested make sure it ain't your own fault before having a go.

If a single pump is used for emptying and washing, there must be a diverter valve to control where the water is going. Using the make/model google for a diverter valve to see if it exists as a spare part. If it does, check to see if existing valve is jammed with the usual suspects, (broken glass, tooth picks etc), before commiting to a new valve or controller.

If you are capable, meter the diverter valve to see if its being commanded to switch flow?

How long should goods last for?

The law doesn't say exactly how long goods should last. The general rule is that goods should last for a reasonable time and in a reasonable condition. For example, a new car should last for several years in a reasonable condition but you may need to replace some of its parts over time.

If goods don't last as long as they should, they probably weren't of satisfactory quality when you bought them. For example, if the sole on a pair of shoes comes away after a few weeks of normal wear, this suggests that they were never of satisfactory quality.

Although legally you can start court action at any time up to six years after you have bought an item this doesn't mean that goods have to last six years. For example, an inexpensive pair of shoes might only be expected to last for a few months whereas a washing machine should last for more than a year

You may need an expert's opinion on how long a particular item can normally be expected to last."

That's the law on it (from the CAB site)

Yep! tis diverter valve thingy, Ours does exactly the same, but when I noticed how much lower our electric bill is, I reverted to using the "Hostess" again! - threatening only to repair it if and when when she leaves!

What make/model? Where in the UK are you. Now if you were in Manchester I know of a really good, trustworthy repair guy.

After a splendid 25 years our Bosch dishwasher had to go last week as it was leaking and a repair wouldn't have been worthwhile. The new one, Bosch naturally, came from John Lewis with a free 2-year warranty.

It cost £349 which I'm sure was much the same as the old one all that time ago. I suppose far more people have them now than then so that manufacturing costs have come down.

We had a Siemens one latterly in the old house and it and Bosch ones at the time had metal arms etc. Fast forward a few years and they are made to a lower price and lots of parts you can see are plastic including the arms.

I suppose they have no option to compete with cheaper makes. Our Siemens one was £350 for a local shop back then and came with a free 5 year warranty. It was a much better dishwasher than the built-in Neff one in this house (I know Neff, Bosch and Siemens are all the same make).

Have you approached the retailer?

I've got the manufacturer coming to repair/replace a 2-year-old armchair that's part of a suite. I don't expect to be parting with any money.

Diverter valve. New one will cost you north of £100... (probably)

Tried the retailer (am I allowed to name and shame them?) and they point blank refused to do anything. All they would offer was to send someone out for £119........ Referred them to SOGA and they just kept telling me it had a 12 month guarantee and I had been offered the chance to extend this so tough.

Next port of call was the manufacturer who were quite different - very apologetic and offered to foot half the bill straight away. Thanked them, but told them that I didn't expect to incur any cost on a 15 month old appliance. Was put through to someone else who agreed, and a free repair is now arranged.

Thumbs up to the manufacturer for doing the right thing, big thumbs down to the retailer who will never see another penny of my money again!

I'd want nothing less than 100% reimbursement, and I'd be prepared to go to war for it.

We recently had this and established that the bottom arm wasn't rotating. On closer inspection a small bit of food had been caught in the hole at the end of the arm which was preventing the water from going through and pushing the arm round.

Removal of sweetcorn and hey presto.....
