 Wimbledon - Meldrew
Bearing in mind the amount of money thrown at "Grass Roots Tennis" by the LTA does anyone think that 4 players into the second round is a good return on the money? Murray is probably the only one who will go further I don't think he is a product of the LTA scheme anyway

"Sport England will still supply £24.5million over the next four years, while the Wimbledon fortnight, which is run by the All England Club, feeds another £30 million annually into its coffers.
Yet this embarrassment of riches has seemed to increase only staffing levels at the £40 million National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, while failing to address the systemic problems in the game. The LTA’s last set of accounts revealed that 296 people were on the payroll at a total cost of £11.5 million – an average of almost £40,000 per head".

Other aspects that irk me are

1. Female players screaming
2. Close ups of Nadal pulling his shorts out of his crack. Get bigger shorts or brief the cameramen, please, It isn't a good sight on a 42" screen
3. Players apparently having to wipe their faces between rallies. Many other sports are just as sweaty and even football players can go 45 minutes with a wipe -off
Rant over and off line for a week!

I only care as far as public money is concerned - is Sport England a publicly funded quango? If so it's a waste if the money is spent, in effect, to train a small number of people to be multi-million pound earners - they should be able to get the investment anyway. I don't see tennis appealing to many of the socially disadvantaged either.

Murray has said IIRC that the LTA "ruined" his older brother Jamie.

Just help me here, please, with the names of our multi-million £ earners! Murray is one but his connection with the LTA scheme is tenuous at best.

I believe this gentleman was a product of LTA coaching finance

"A tennis pro who took libel action against a newspaper which labelled him the "world's worst" professional player has lost his case in the High Court.
Robert Dee, 23, from Bexley, sued the Daily Telegraph over its story, which pointed out his 54 defeats in a row.

Sport England is indeed a quango dispersing a mix of lottery and treasury funding.

4. "Fist-pumping" after you win every tedious, tiresome, monotonously dull, whack the ball hard and watch your opponent fail to return point.

I enjoyed the match a couple of years ago that ended with the final set running to 100-odd games - best example of tenacity and desire to win I've seen in tennis.
