How wealthy are you? - John H
Are you one of the UK's wealthy super-rich - or one of the millions on the verge of poverty?

simple interactive tool:

56% have a lower income than me, but I'm in the squeezed middle.......

Live within your means and you'll be wealthy.

Live outside your means and no matter how much money you have you're gonna end up poor.

My butler's doing this now just before cook prepares the swan for dinner. Seems I'm er..ok.

True the more I earn the more I just spend. On hour household details it comes up as 46% have a lower income than our household. Put I have put the details in as if I were my parents, e.g living as a couple with two kids.

One of the kids have moved out though, so I am not sure how accurate that would be, but if my sister was still here 87% of the population are worse off than us! Something doesn't seem quite right!.

We are by far the poorest in our entire family, so I must have a very very rich extended family.

It's measuring income, not wealth.

Write to the Guardian to complain.

3% have a lower income than me (and what I've counted is my wife's!).

I am currently unemployed seeking a new challenge.

I suppose I need to spend more time job searching and less arguing on here! I've had a day off today :-)

Technically I'm in poverty.

But I own my own home, no mortgage, no debts, car each, eat what we want, have our hobbies and a modest amount in the bank.

People who bang on about poverty ought to move out to Africa for a few months, then they'd know what it really is.
How wealthy are you? - RattleandSmoke
Yep its all relative. My parents problem was never really income, but a legacy of debt caused patchy employment resulting in lots of debts mounting up and having to mortgage the house in the 1990's. Now they have virtually paid of the mortgage and are a lot more comfortable.

8% apparently, but then it has zero to do with wealth though Im not suprised such an elementary distinction is beyond the Guardian.

Oh the poverty, what shall we do? No account of aquired wealth taken so a totally meaningless load of drivel with an excitable title to match.

Same here.... but it doesn't take into account any expenditure does it. We've no longer got a mortgage for example and costs for rent/mortgage vary across the country.

Our income wouldn't go as far in central London obviously but then we'd probably be on more anyway if we lived there. Or I'd hope anyway.

I have a squeezed middle apparently. And humph said I had eaten all the pies!
How wealthy are you? - madf
As I avoid paying tax, I'm poor.
How wealthy are you? - Duncan
FWIW, £22,250 appears to be the median.

I had put in two children over 14 even though technically they are adults. One is still studying and one has just finished. So both a bit of a financial burden for a bit.

I I say no children (well they are adults) then my position jumps from 56% to 85%.
How wealthy are you? - ....
I'm shocked !
The Guardian reckons I'd be better off single with no children according to their simple interactive tool.
With three children I jump 14% if I dump my wife.

Only 22% worse off than us!
(I say us deliberately as my wife has her own, nearly full amount, State Pension).
OTH we own our own house and apart from an usurious rate, {poor credit}, credit card debt of £250, which I could pay off today, we owe nothing!

Blimey - If we handed the kids over to social services then we jump up to 91%

It looks as if they drop you by 6% for each child which is not a fair way of doing it. Subsequent children tend to be less costly due to a degree of commonality!
How wealthy are you? - Lygonos
That's why it works - each 6% drop requires less £ than the previous 6% drop.

I'm rich.

We're healthy and happy.

Money comes and goes, sometimes we have it sometimes we don't.

It's not a problem and never will be.

Whichever, we're always happy and that to us is being rich.

Before we get sucked into this claptrap, remember it is the Guardian, and like all papers they have their own agenda.

I took the test and quite frankly don't believe the results. If I am as rich as they claim that I am, how come that - despite a very modest lifestyle - I live in a terraced house, don't have loads in the bank and don't drive a better car.
How wealthy are you? - Lygonos
Because your house costs a lot compared to the rest of the UK?

The biggest reason for being 'rich' but cash poor is having house that's too big/expensive.

I recently read (can't remember where, getting old), that many baby boomers are relying on the equity in their houses to fund their retirement when they downsize. Unfortunately the post boomer generation won't be able to afford the houses so this plan may have the flaw in that house prices will fall in the inflated house price areas. I have been told that the FSA are ferociously monitoring mortgage lending at the moment to ensure that they are affordable. Not surprising as in a nearby newbuild area there has been a historical first time buyer repossesion rate of 15%. As the senior boomers are only starting to retire now this will become a bigger problem over the next ten years or so.
