Dacias are quite a common sight here thanks to the scrappage scheme a couple of years ago. They're cheap for a reason though. Unpleasant to drive and the interiors are not a nice place to be. Do surprisingly well in the ADAC reliability reports - better than Renault!

They'll sell well I reckon.

As I understand it the whole Dacia range is built on the platform of the Mk 2 Clio. As this was one of the more reliable Renaults, Dacias should also be basically reliable even if they are shoddily built on the inside and unpleasant to drive - again, similar to the Mk2 Clio!

Base price in Spain is €11,400 (£9,300) for 2WD petrol

Yet another thread title I misunderstood.
Actually, they are. Five decent-size microfibre ones for three euros I noticed the other day...

Eugh. I can't stand the things. They stick to the roughness of my hands.

Duster? What an odd model name for a car.

Not as bad as the new Vauxhall coming out.....

They've called it the 'Adam'!

I could just imagine telling people that i drive a Vauxhall Adam!.
NOT...!

Just come back from Corsica where we saw lots of them. In the right colour they looked quite classy (dark metal grey for example) in others they looked cheap and nasty (strangely white, which looks good on many other cars). Havn't looked inside one though.

I've got a mountain bike called a Charge Duster. Charge also produce bikes with names such as Mixer, Zester, Plug, Cooker, Filter, Decanter, Scissor, Scourer, etc. You get the idea I'm sure.
I am now seriously ordering a Dacia Duster when the order book opens on June 28th and not just so that I have bike and car with matching names, I'm Not that sad!

I've been teasing my 11-year old (called Adam) that that's his first car sorted. He is not amused, even at 11!

And you think Dacia (the makers name) isn't?

And then there's their other model - The Sandero. Sounds like the name of a certain bank to me.

£395 to extend to 5 year warranty and £850 to extend to 7.

Think this may eat into the Koreans market gains of late

Is that a manufacturers warranty like the KIA free (included in the price of the car one)?

The name Dacia goes back thousands of years and equates to an area now known as Romania, roughly,
which is where the jamjars are produced.

Dacia was finally conquered by Trajan and a column stands in Rome to this day commemorating his victory and hence the countries present name. Romanians still speak a Latin language not unlike Italian.

Not a lot of people know that ;-)

Some more do now !

There's loads of them round here. French Renault dealers have been selling Dacias for a long time - I really can't figure out why if they want to sell their own-brand stuff.
Most of the ones I see are a sort of metallic turd colour.

I saw a lot of them when in France last year. Perfectly sound looking motors for a budget buy. You can't go wrong and I've often wondered why they weren't brought here !

...I've often wondered why they weren't brought here !...

Because buyers will say they find a poverty spec budget car attractive.

But when it comes to it, they won't buy one.

Look at our member Bagpuss.

He tried, but couldn't bring himself, to buy a budget Panda, and that wasn't even for his own use.

They would have done well under the abysmal scrappage scheme...

Maybe, but I expect most of the small Kias and Hyundais sold under the scheme had air con, leccy windows, central locking, trip computer, etc etc.

Also popular in Turkey, The Renault dealers there are joint Renault / Dacia outfits.

I've driven the Sandero and Sandero Stepway (higher ride, more add-ons, bit more rugged). They'll do a job. Cheap compared to other brands, and very utilitarian. But pure 80s styling and technology. And gearbox. And brakes.
One still gets a 'this will break pretty damn soon' feel from the interior fittings, which isn't reassuring.
Also, one of the throwbacks is a detachable face radio as standard - when was the last time I saw one of them?

Amazingly, I got a speeding fine in a Sandero - 90 in an 80 zone. One for James May, perhaps?

Anybody remember the Dacia Denem that was imported to the UK, I think, in the early 1980's? It was effectively a rebadged Renault 12 and was pretty dated when it was first introduced.

I also remember the original Dacia Duster 4x4. When I lived 'up north' in Yorkshire, a local farmer ran two of the original Duster's, with consecutive number plates. I can't remember the details, but recall that they had petrol engines, which was pretty unusual for a farm 4x4. From memory, they were soon pensioned off and replaced with a Land Rover or some form of Japanese 4x4, as they weren't standing up well to the rigours of farm life. I guess you get what you pay for!

>>Anybody remember the Dacia Denem that was imported to the UK<<

I worked on a few D/Denems in the 80's and would have one any day - in preference to the Yugo/Zastava,
FSO Polenez - Lada - Moskvitch - Wartburg - Skoda etc. of that era.

Here's a Denem in showroom condition.....nice !

Could be a clever move by Renault. Their sales are down quite a bit, Dacia might fill the gap and maybe a bit more.

Shame Renault can't address why their cars aren't selling as well though. Now the build quality and general reliability has improved, the styling has gone down the mainstream worthy but dull route.

Colleague has a Megane CC - He paid for the factory bluetooth and its never worked properly - after several attempts to fix it they gave up and fitted a parrot instead.

Its had a few other issues, but his major gripe is how they handled it, and that has put him off buying another
