Just had to pop over to the local Asda, where first I noticed they'd increased the number of self-checkouts, and they looked a bit different. Then when I put my bananas on the scales and pressed the 'lookup fruit & veg' button, instead of being presented with a screenful of options, it only showed 'bananas'.
Looking at the till more closely, it does look more sophisticated (well it's got more flashing lights than it had before). Is it actually using some sort of fruit/veg recognition software, or even just detecting the distinctive yellowness? Or something else?

I so want that to be true Focus. Brilliant !

they measure the length of your arms via a scanner on entry. Yours must have been at knee level.

That would have been the 10 pints of milk I was carrying :)

Wonder if ANPR cameras can spot a Lemon ?

Can't find anything on tinternet - going to have to do some experiments during the full Saturday morning shop...
|
I'm going to have to go to an Asda now and get one of everything. ( will I need a tattoo to get in ? )

No, but having spent all his money on essentials he didn't have much left for luxuries like food and Vim.

Stolen and dumped. Saw it on police interceptors.

No, but you will leave less of your wealth behind than you do at Waitrose, and it will be good practice for the years of austerity ahead!
|
Heh heh ! I've not been in a Waitrose since I got married. Can't afford both.
|
There's a Waitrose about 50 yards away from where I work in Bath, so it's very easy to pop over there for some lunch. I always bring in home made sandwiches.
|
That's the very one I remember using all those years ago. Used to live in Bath. But.....lurching back to topic.......clever tills eh ? Like it.

I don't know if you've used one, but they already do stuff like weigh the bags as you put stuff in them after scanning, so they can detect if you 'forget' to scan something.

Pretty clever. According to my significant other, I have trouble identifying the right comestibles when sent out hunting and gathering.
Keep coming home with pork pies (Sainsbury's are good) instead of broccoli.

The Waitrose premium cornish pasties have an imorral hold on me.

Break the hold and get yourself a decent car with the savings.

Oh you beauty ! Potential KO punch Focus !

Hey - I shop at Asda on a Saturday morning; I don't need reinforcements.
|
About the only white face in our Asda this morning. Brilliant for all sorts of exotic veg and fruit, Okra, Sweet potatoes, etc...... Indian and African, delicacies. Even a Polish ( not Mr Sheen ) section. Can't read the packets though...have to rely on the pictures !
Mostly West Indian staff brill at giving SWMBO advice on how to cook the odd stuff.

This sort of thing has been used for years. Farms use them to scan fruits for defects before they end up in the shops. It is quite easy for software to regconise different fruits. I guess it will be work on a combination of pixel data and weight.

stopped using arsda when they sold out to the yanks
i miss associated dairies and their business ethos

I guess every little helps Bellboy.

Can you expand, so I know whether to feel guilty? I'm afraid they're the closest and cheapest which are strong reasons for me.

No need to struggle Focus, Zero is only upset because he knows Fords are better value for money than 'some other makes' !

Drat - just remembered our other car is a Mitsu Colt, which is actually quite good. I'm out.

I hate these machines with a vengeance - they are far worse than AC's seventh circle of Hell.
If they can identify a banana, why can't they work out I'm over 18 ?
why can't they work out no authorisation is necessary for the indigestion tablets
why do they keep telling you to insert cash long after I have done so.
why can't they cope with newspapers - 'assistance needed, check weight'
why can some of them not live with the concept that you don't want a bag !
snarl rant snarl
I need to go and lie down in a darkened room fir a while
