My home PC is a Dell desktop and my wife has a Toshiba laptop connected wirelessly via a router. If I buy myself a netbook what will I have to do to get it connected via the existing router?
All help will be greatly appreciated.

you connect it the same way as your wifes Tosh via wireless. windows will find the network, you will need to enter the password for your wireless router, and bingo.

Someone on here had trouble connecting more than one device to their router.
If you already have two devices connected, then there shouldn't be a problem connecting another one.
A modern netbook is the same as a laptop, only smaller.
Buy a dongle at the same time, and you'll be able to use the netbook while out and about, and you'll have standby access in the house should your main connection conk out.

Wasn't that because it wasn't actually a router?

Yes smokie you are right in remembering the previous details. It turned out that was only an access point. That could connect only one client, period.
To the OP, if you have a router including a wireless access point (sounds like you do) then it will be straight forward. Just like the laptop currently connects.

Yep we've done this. Or consider a MiFi (see this thread goo.gl/hSDE ) which I would have done had I heard of them.
