Volkswagen has lost its legal battle to prevent Suzuki from using the familiar 'GTI' tag on one of its cars.

The German firm appealed when the European Union’s OHIM trademark office rejected its complaint that the Swift GTi name that Suzuki wanted to register would cause confusion with the celebrated Golf GTI.

But today’s ruling from the European Court of Justice backed the OHIM in declaring that the public would not be confused - particularly as car makers including Rover, Peugeot, Citroen, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Toyota have all used the term GTI on some models.

Seems a rather spiteful piece of legal action by VW after their recent 'divorce'.

It appears Suzuki want to force VW to sell their remaining shareholding in Suzuki, as it is likely to put some companies off future partnerships with the Japanese company.
