Game not working - Stuu |
I had to remove some malware earlier with the help of a nice man on the phone ( I know nothing ) and it seems to have gone but now my computer wont launch a game - I click on the icon, press the play button... and nothing, failure to launch so to speak. He had me download a malware tool thingy and rkill, whatever these are and also did a system restore back to earlier this month, but ive had the game longer than then. I reinstalled the game, made sure DirectX was the latest one, not sure whats up, but Im no computer guy - any easy clues? |

Where did the game come from? RKill is a program which simply kills known malicious processes. It shouldn't be used as the only way to remove viruses, it is just a tool used amongst many. It could be that the game contained infected files, especially if the source wasn't legal and that is why it no longer works. Many spyware scanners will remove parts of pirated software because they cannot be trusted. If the game is genuine then just try reinstalling it. |

Game is deffo genuine, I had no problems with the game before I downloaded these two things the fella told me to ( that said the malware was playing all sorts of games so little choice it seemed ). Ive reinstalled the game twice already, should I get the stuff I downloaded gone and see if that helps? Ive also noticed that the sound for Windows has now stopped working, but works for everything else. |

Might be worth running this and posting the results here. download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html The program with virus removal is it is quite difficult to do properly, I spend a lot of my time learning new removal techniques. Scanners are only the half of it. |

Downloading as we speak. |

Well there is nothing too alarming there, but will have another read of it. However is the game called Age of Empires because the launcher is running. It could be that there is left overs from the uninstall causing issues. Have you tried reinstalling Direct X? I assume you're using Norton? You might also want to uninstall a lot of that HP crap, it will be slowing your PC down. Just noticed your Java is out of date too, it won't fix the game but it will make your system more secure if you update it. Last edited by: RattleandSmoke on Thu 30 Jun 11 at 21:42

Just stuff like HP tool bars that sort of thing, is nothing but a big advert which uses up your RAM. It is one thing that makes me mad about HP, they are one of the worse offenders for it. I would google your problem too, as many times it is very specific, but simply put for what ever reason the launcher is not launching the correct files to make the game work. |

Okies thx chap. |

Just a thought, it could also be file system damage, either from a failing hard drive or just normal file system issues. It might be worth running chkdsk/ f from the command line. It will take a long time but it might fix the issue if its a bad file system. |

I am just wondering this myself, there is a big scam going on at the moment they pretend to be Microsoft and plant viruses on your PC which contains a key logger. However RKILL is a genuine program, if little known outside the tech world. It sounds like the viruses or the removal process as damaged parts of windows. You can try SFC /scannow now to see if it finds any files which have been modified, it will then replace it with genuine ones. |

And wheres might I find that? Perhaps of note, about 5 minutes before the Malware file was apparently created, a Windows Vista update failed. No idea if thats significant. |
Game not working - RattleandSmoke |
It is a command you type into the command line prompt :). You will also probably need your windows CD handy. It doesn't change any of your windows settings, but it does replace 'damaged/edited/misisng' essential windows files. The idea being if a rootkit has edited any of them this command replace them. Do you know what type of virus you had? A lot of machines now with a rootkit which acts a botnet, so unless done properly, a virus scanner can say your system is clean, when its sending out spam and reading your passwords. |
