 Lost Samsonite Key - Ambo
My Samsonite Classic Attache Case (brown, strong magnesium frame; model produced from 1972 to about 1978) has come to light after years of storage. It is locked but the key has been lost. The key has an unusual near-rectangular top. There is one on Bay for £7.02 but its shaft looks very short from the one I recall.

It is very heavy and I can't remember what it contains. A locksmith asked £80 to pick the locks! Can any poster suggest how to get access? I have tried levering open but failed. I don't mind wrecking the two locks in the process.

If you don't care about destroying the locks, I would have them open in a heartbeat.

I would jam a screwdriver in the key slot, clamp some mullgrips round the handle and twist,

Drill out the lock

Use my dremel to grind through the hasp

Buy a wave rake if I wanted to save the locks. covertinstruments.com/products/genesis-lock-pick

They were good cases but I can’t imagine the locks would be that complex or varied. I have no experience of them but there is a specialist key supplier, Aldridge’s. I have no connection but they look worth a shout. They are in Berkshire but do mail order on keys. There doesn’t seem to be a vast range.

If they haven’t got a key then you might need to force it. After all even if you can pick it open you are still stuck with a case you can’t use for fear of snapping it shut. Unless there is a key code inside the case?

The man with most boring voice in the world seems to make it look pretty easy to get into a simple suitcase type lock here. I've started it after most of the droning.

Thanks Crankcase but I can't get into You Tube unless I open a Gmail account, which I don't want.

I approached Samsonite, saying I didn't know the lock number. They helpfully suggested I check the number on the lock barrel.

Pretty sure you dont need a gmail account to get into youtube

"Pretty sure you dont need a gmail account to get into youtube"

You don't, not to play videos. But you do if you want to comment and do some of the other stuff which I don't usually bother with.

Take it to any airport and ask one of the baggage handlers to open it for you for a couple of quid.

Or a scouser.

..in these strange times, leaving it outside the nearest military establishment would probably get it rapidly opened via means of a "controlled explosion"...

Do you have a Timpsons nearby? The staff are always helpful and in the past his recruitment process ensured that many staff had significant relevant experience :) Much better bet than many independent rip off locksmiths.

Thank you, martin aston. Aldridge's identified the key number but I couldn't make its order system work. Eventually Bagcraft supplied the keys today.

Maybe a note indicating the key number ?

Disappointing. Just documents, most out of date, the rest of marginal interest. No indication of key no.

Clearing the loft, found some old copies of Mayfair, '70s I reckon. Gives me something to look at while I'm isolating - It's an ill wind...............................

I have a few mid 70s Mayfairs in the workshop. Only for the ' road tests ' of the Chrysler Airflow and a couple of vintage aircraft, you understand.

Like James Hunt landing at Jan Smuts for the '76 Kyalami GP with a copy of Playboy.

'There's a feature about me in there that I want to read.'

So the customs guy tore out the relevant pages and confiscated the rest.

I wonder if he got, erm, intimate with the interviewer, again!
