Who's your favourite radio DJ? - corax
Just been talking about radio DJ's on motoring (usual thread drift!) and found myself wondering if there will ever be anyone to replace the likes of my favourite DJ John Peel. I used to listen to all his night shows and taped them to make sure I didn't miss any juicy titbits. You actually felt like he was talking to you personally, he was always self deprecating and modest but he was a really warm human being with a brilliant turn of phrase and dry wit. His voice as he got older just seemed to get more charismatic, when I heard him it felt like wearing a pair of favourite slippers.

I was pretty stunned by his sudden death and went to his funeral in Bury St.Edmunds, and very glad that I did as the music (howling wolf, undertones, roy orbison) they played over the crowd was great, and lifted everyones spirits even though it was a very cold day.

It used to be Steve Wright in the afternoon on Radio 1 back in the 90's with Arnie the Terminator with the Uzzie 9mm.

But today im too old for Radio 1 & too young for Radio 2 so it's Galaxy or Real Radio up here in Leeds.

Or Desmond Carrington.
Sometimes David Jacobs.

Kenny Everet.

Current daytime weekdays Simon Mayo, for nice natured interesting variety.

Quick moan, am i alone in feeling nauseous at the never ending line of luvvies invited onto the Steve Wright show to be fawned over whilst promoting their latest book/show/film.

edit, what time is Kenny Everets show on these days...don't know if that speelings right i thought it was Everitt.

Ah good you've set the precedent then.

Best radio DJ of all time for amusing anecdotal presentation with a gentle warmth got to be Ray Moore.

I suppose John Peel and Bob Harris have attended to my taste in music o'er the decades,
Also, I quite enjoy listening to Rick Wakeman when he's on Planet Rock, he's a great larf.

No. I also hate the constant - "Love the show Steve" comments. I therefore don't listen to him and I'm an avid R2 listener.

My favourites - Radcliffe and Maconie.
Who's your favourite radio DJ? - Armel Coussine
Wolfman Jack.

Or he would be if I ever listened to anything except Radio 4 during the couple of hours a day when it isn't The Archers. And the odd CD from time to time.

But music in the car gets on my nerves after a while. The music is all right but it makes the car sound funny.

>> I ever listened to anything except Radio 4 during the

...and have you noticed how many other programmes are repeated at least once (within the week) on R4? When I was first married, we managed quite well for a few years without a TV, but we were great consumers of R4 - music all the time is too wearing. But the repeats drove us to get a television, the final nail being when the children arrived and we got a washing machine. No more companionable Wednesday night trips to the library for new books, followed by 2 hours in the launderette reading them!

Now there's a man with one of the least charismatic voices on the radio, thin and weedy - terrible forced laughter with afore-mentioned luvvies as well.

Of those extant:

One of the best record shows on the wireless must be Brian Matthew's Sounds of the 60s. He plays some surprising stuff amongst the nostalgia and there's often a story attached.

I've a 3 hour drive to do on a Saturday morning in a couple of weeks and I'll make sure I set off at 8am to get the full 2 hours.

Radcliffe & Maconie too. And if you haven't, check out Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone at 18.00 tonight on BBC Radio 6. Some Fairport, inter alia, I believe.

Desmond Carrington's show is eclectic, educational, entertaining and informative. Lang may his lum reek.

I like to learn something, hear something new (or old). Probably why I don't "get" Chris Evans.

Peely RIP. The best.

We did this topic a few months ago when my liking for Tony Blackburn attracted predictable howls of derision.

Well, top Tone news - he's taking over Pick of the Pops on R2 from Dale Winton.

Camp Dale pre-recorded the show, I bet Tony does it live.

Yes, indeedy.

And loosely on the topic of media, the North West branch of C4P might like to take a look at Countryfile on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

The very comely Julia Bradbury is bounding around Alderley Edge and other bits of Cheshire.

Johnnie Walker would swing it for me with Radcliff and/or Maconie a close second. Chris Evans should be on kids TV, he's too stupid to present a grown up show.

Like that awful old creature from Leeds you mean, the charitable slum landlord? Why wish these poisonous twerps on innocent children? Their function is to maintain young adults in a condition of confused, over-excited idiocy.

They are fairly lousy at it, a cacophony of false notes. But they don't need to be much good. Their intended victims flock eagerly to the slaughter, giggling and uttering moronic fashionable grunts.

But the powers that be believe in belt and braces. So the Evanses and Saviles of this world rake in their filthy millions.

I quite like Evans, although I am usually at work as he starts his show. I knwo he is not to everyones taste, and think his problem is his reputation.

I hated him first time around, and thought he was a right knob, but I think he now realises that he has been given a second chance and holds his listeners in high esteme. His book is a pretty good read - some fab bits about Branson and getting him to fly Concorde during his bitter rows with BA. The book pretty well spells out that he was a pratt back then in his own words.

I'll add Ken Bruce to my favourites list for his dry humour. Of all the DJ's he is probably the one who would fit in best on this forum.

Ken Bruce told a wee story the other day which made me smile.

It relates the tale of an older gentleman and a young, stunningly attractive but much younger lady who go into a jeweler's shop on a Friday lunchtime. The man asks the jeweler to show them some diamond rings. After looking at a few trays the man asks if there is anything a bit better as nothing is too good for his companion. The jeweler produces a further selection of rings including one which is priced at £5000. The young lady admires that one but the old man rejects it saying that he had really wanted something very special, money no object, nothing being too good for her.

So, the jeweler goes to the safe and fetches a single ring. Huge diamond in a platinum setting. The old chap asks how much it is and the jeweler informs him it is priced at £85000. " We'll take it" says the man. Could you size it by Monday ? "Of course says the jeweler but I'm afraid I'll have to ask for a substantial deposit." "No problem" says the old guy, " Here's a cheque for the full amount, when it has cleared the bank on Monday and you have sized the ring, we'll be in to collect it"

Well, Monday comes and the jeweler calls the fellow and worriedly informs him that the cheque hasn't cleared and that the bank informed him that there was no money in that account at all. " I know, I know", says the old man, "but what a weekend I've had..."
Who's your favourite radio DJ? - Zero

Fantastic as in beyond imagining maybe. I tried again last week when I was on the road, as I keep thinking I must be missing something. If he only opened his trap when he had something vaguely interesting to say, he'd never speak.

Chris Evans is a very good radio broadcaster, Alas he appeared on television and now I cant get that awful picture out of mind.
Who's your favourite radio DJ? - Robin O'Reliant
Evans ruined Drive Time. He turned it from an entertaining and informative show with a wide range of good music into a self promoting pile of childish drivel. When he did have a guest with something interesting to say he would interrupt some banal observation before the speaker had a chance to make his point.

The bit that drove me up the wall was that stupid daily phone call from a kid who had done something for the first time that day. I was so tempted to bribe my nephew to read something from a prepared script that would have finished Evan's career for ever, but doubtless I would have ended up on some sort of register or other.

Why has nobody mentioned Wogan (now Sundays)?

Plus the hilarious Jill and John stories...:-)

Even better when Wogan, Lynn Bowles and Alan Dedicoat read them with such glee.

You can blame the top brass at the BBC. They fall in love with these people, stick them on a pedestal, and give in to their every whim. Then you find they get everywhere and you can't escape them - the same happened with Jonathan Ross until he went a step too far. I remember Wossy interviewing David Bowie and asking him if he looked at porn on his computer, it was toe curlingly embarrassing, when you consider the things Bowies' got up to in his illustrious career. Maybe he does, but I'd rather hear about some exciting rock stories than the possibility that Bowie might be on the same level as Ross.

Seen this happen a few times, most recently with Colin Murray on 5Live and now MOTD2.

I happen to think the guy is average, and his voice wearing, but that's not the point I'm making.

Same thing in the punditry role is happening with Robbie Savage.

I agree about Wogan's Janet and John stories. At the time I had a little job delivering to schools and at the end of each story there would be numerous car doors slamming in the staff car park.

I used to like Johnny Walker and regret never going to the coast to flash a message when he was on Caroline. I was pleased when he came (back?) the the beeb, but a little disappointed with his presentation. I suppose I was expecting too much.
Who's your favourite radio DJ? - Focusless
Used to listen to John Peel at uni. Obviously I would never have bought more than half the stuff he played, but that wasn't the point - the variety was great, and you might hear something that might be your favourite record ever that you wouldn't have heard anywhere else.

Don't listen to much radio these days - Radio 4 seems to make the time pass most quickly on the 150 mile round trip commute between Reading and Bath 2 days a week, although if I leave late enough on Thursday I can catch most of Bob Harris Country on Radio 2. Would like to hear more of Radcliffe & Maconie - fantastic musical knowledge and I like the stuff they play. Ditto to a lesser extent Brain Matthew Sounds of the 60s.

I know a lot of people hate him but Jonathon Ross's Radio 2 Saturday morning show made me laugh - again there was the combination of knowledge and musical content. I remember he had Simon Schama (IIRC) on as a guest, and asked him for his favourite period of history - can't remember what Schama said, but JR said the French revolution and proceeded to give a 5(?) minute summary without pausing for breath.

If I'm pottering around in the kitchen - Absolute 80s (DAB). Don't care who the DJ is. This evening's "wow I'd forgotten how good that was" Japan's Quiet Life

Haven't got a favourite DJ since Mark & Lard finished on Radio 1.

I find I'm too old to listen to Radio 1, and not quite old enough for Radio 2 just yet.

If I listen to the radio I mainly listen to one of the local stations. Either Heart FM (formerly Fox FM) or Jack FM.

Actually I listen to Heart FM a lot less since the Oxford station merged with Heart FM in Reading. Do I really want to know what the traffic conditions are like in Slough, Basingstoke, Newbury, Reading etc on my daily commute through south Oxfordshire?

Jack FM is always having a dig at Heart FM. Their slogan is "we play what we want, when we want" - a pop at Heart FM who have to stick to a playlist. Also Jack FM is now the only true Oxfordshire radio station.

'None' is the short answer.

Jack FM is a global, licensable radio station into which operators put as much, or as little, local content as they wish.

Talking of the 80s, I've been distracted this morning by watching the 'Edwyn Collins: Home again' documentary on YouTube. Not that I'm a huge fan or anything but I caught a rave review of a gig on the Evening Standard website and thought I'd have a mooch around for some footage.

It's a remarkable story, see if you can watch it without shedding a tear or two.

My Father had a super-massive cerebral hemorrhage at age 54 when I was 9, thankfully he never survived it,

I didn't feel sad for Ed Collins, as tragic as it is, he's had a successful career, and as he says - he's just glad to be alive + his got a caring wife and is receiving physio, he's lucky in many ways, I hope he recovers further at some time.

I rarely listen to the 'national' stations unless I'm on a long journey, then it's Radio 2. I normally listen to Real Radio, and very much like a chap called Wes Butters. He used to present the Chart Show on Radio 1 apparently and has also written two books, one about Kenneth Williams and one about Charles Hawtrey.

Sometimes, Smooth Radio gets a look-in and I like a fellow called Stewart Ellis. He's got a very easy-to-listen to voice and a good sense of humour. Andy Peebles is also good, he plays some excellent music but he does waffle on sometimes.

Ere!!! I may as well post this here as anywhere else (being music related)
I called a firm in the other day to sell me owse and they put me on to a geezer for the ole EPC, like,
He wanted to fleece me for 120 sovs, so I gets a geezer orf the ww who does it for £60 inc, VAT,
Anyway, turns out the geezer is non other than John Lennon (straight up)
So here's a tube of him and his mates, and, being an accomplished musician meself, like, I'd give em 7/10

I've already got that on favourites spamcam :)

Not being particularly computer savvy, how does that work? Do you have to plug in a remote keyboard and link your computer up to a hifi system? I could have hours of fun on there! I noticed that they do the software for other synths as well. Analogue Factory looks good.
 Who's your favourite radio DJ? - spamcan61
I assume you can hook it up to a MIDI keyboard via a MIDI to USB converter (these vary greatly in quality - in terms of delay), personally I just use the mouse to click on the virtual keyboard, chords are for wimps.

Maybe they've changed the T&Cs, it says 15 day trial on that page but mine's been working for a couple of years at least. I did try a few of the other virtual synths on that site but, like in real life IMHO, the Jupiter 8 is the easiest way of making lots of nice (and not so nice) noises.

Going back a bit, Annie Nightingale's request shows got me through the homework stints on Sunday evenings as a teenager. My friends and I would list all the songs we liked that she played and then compare notes at school on Monday morning.

Currently broadcasting has to be Radcliffe & Maconie, why the BBC cut them down to three nights a week I'll never know. There's loads of Mark & Lard clips on Youtube, including Lard's classic cuts Mull of Kintyre which is hilarious.

Steve Wright shouldn't be allowed near a microphone, his 'love the show Steve' listener comments have become a bit of a joke elsewhere, I'm sure Radcliffe & Maconie throw a few into their shows now and again as an in joke.

One of my minicabbing colleagues in Clapham in the seventies fancied her as well, although she was quite young then. Actually Zero you remind me of him in various ways. He wasn't exactly nice but you knew where you were with him, and he was renowned for bottle. Drove a Datsun 160J and I once followed him down the Clapham Road at 80-plus, no kidding. Scotty in his Humber Hawk was one of the three crazed bullets. Very foul-mouthed in a genial sort of way too. Wish I could remember his name.

Anyway, his words on Ms Nightingale as far as I can remember, uttered in an admiring tone and based on something he had read or seen on TV, were: 'If she fancies anyone, she 'as it.'

I always used to like Roger Scott on Capital back on the late 70s, and used to appreciate the time and effort that Kenny Everitt put into his shows - all pre-digital.

Nowadays I like Simon Mayo, Johnny Walker, and sometimes Steve Wright. Can't stand Evans, though.
Who's your favourite radio DJ? - Robin O'Reliant
I find Mayo too bland. The "Homework Sucks", and "Confessions" spots on his show have me violenty thumping the off button on the car radio. They're overlong and boring.

One show I used to love when it was on a Tueday night was Desmond Carrington. A very varied selection of music encompassing all eras and genres that was responsible for over 50% of my spending on itunes when he would play some long forgotten gem that stirred the memories.

I'm not convinced about him moving to the drivetime slot yet. He's alright but not exactly bringing anything new to the table.

MC Desmo - he is quality. He's still there 'from home in Perthshire' but they shunted him due to Jamie Cullum - another one I switch off.
