Herself has a lurid, dark purple black eye. She has delicate skin, easily bruised. But she hadn't walked into anything let alone been brutalised by nasty old me. She showed me what had happened: she'd given herself a tiny scratch with her little-finger nail, and the shiner had blossomed from that.

I am getting dirty looks in the supermarket, many of them from strapping Sussex blondes who could flatten me with a single back-hander.

My ex-wife used to play lacrosse at international level. For anyone who thinks its a girly game, make no mistake it can be vicious!

One day she was playing in a match and went to catch a very fast high volley but was temporarily blinded by it coming at her from on high and straight out of the sun. The ball. ( similar weight and hardness to a cricket ball ) hit her square on the bridge of her nose and completely smashed it and both her cheekbones, knocked her out cold and she was hospitalised.

In due course she need fairly extensive plastic surgery to rebuild her nose and that was thankfully successfully achieved in the end but initially the original injury had to be left to heal before the procedure could begin.

About a week after the accident, she was released from hospital and feeling a bit low. I asked her if there was anything she would like to do and she asked if I'd accompany her for a walk into town.

Never have I had so many dirty looks and muttered comments...

She asked me to look at it today. It's definitely getting slowly less dark and lurid, oh good.

Fortunately it doesn't hurt at all.
