In another thread, there is a discussion about whether those who fail to insure are deserving of charity.
Today, I see a local man, who perhaps rather irrelevantly is suffering from cancer, has had his house burned down by arsonists. He has been left with nothing at all, apparently literally. To add to the woe, he has lost all his photos of his now dead son.
However, he wasn't insured.
So - is he deserving of charity, in the panels view?

Yes. Everyone is deserving of charity, even the stupid.
But that doesn't mean he should be fully compensated. Perhaps a place in a hostel and some Salvation Army clothing.

Why didn't he have insurance I wonder? .. reminds me of ole Laurie Smith the leather craftsman I knew up on Bodmin Moor, he never had any insurance in the 23 years he lived in his isolated cottage but, he was fortunate in being luved by so many and helped by so many too o'er the years ... he died from prostate cancer.

If he is homeless the local council are obliged to find him some sort of accommodation be it only a B and B. There may well be charities out there that will provide him with the basics of life such as clothing and hopefully any friends, neighbours and family will assist but I'm afraid nobody is going to compensate him for the loss of his house.
A lesson for those who begrudge paying for insurance.

No he doesn't need charity. His living son is nearby so he can sort him out and I'm guessing from the location he could well have lived his life by the cash culture. It says he's now living in a caravan so he has a roof over his head. I wonder who he upset.

Slightly off topic but I thought that if you had a mortgage then it was compulsory to have at least buildings insurance.
When I bought my first house the lender insisted I have both buildings & contents cover with them, at great expense too. Today insurance seems to be much cheaper, unless you put in expensive claims or live in a high risk area. Same as car insurance I suppose.
I use comparison sites for every renewal, and my current insurer invariably matches the lowest quote, like for like, although this year Aviva send me £20 in M & S vouchers to match the lowest quote. I cannot understand anyone not insuring their property, even if only the minimum contents.

The question though was does he deserve charity, not quite the same thing.
|
No... he's made life choices and has no doubt enjoyed the benefit of those choices. No-one else should have to sweep up after if it all goes wrong.

Ed Miliband and the Labour Party and associated lovvies will emphatically disagree with you. They think that the less fortunate should be protected from their own stupidity...And of course, stupid people agree with them..:-)

Apparently some people are so mean and so ignorant that they have been lobbying for British foreign aid to be cut so that all the money can be spent saving us from the floods. It's a well-known fact of course that earmarking money for purposes has a startling effect on the weather. Tchah!
Damn halfwits must have been reading all that crap about how broke the country is. Piece by Peter Oborne in the comic today saying much the same. He gets better and better.

He isn't left with nothing. He has a plot of land with planning permission, in affluent Cambridgeshire.

"Is there anything more disgusting than a money grabbing Socialist?"
A comment.

Guido (Paul Staines) is of course a mischievous right wing blogger. While entertaining, nothing he says should be taken at face value.
Brown is a son of the Manse and appears to carry the Presbyterian morality. Is there any real proof that he's lining his pockets in ex PM style of Blair or Major?

Point taken, Tony Blair is doing okay I see, another money grabbing Socialist?

In what world can words Tony Blair and Socialist be conjoined except as opposites?

Two words, their choice - "New Labour".

Well you might asume that but his home might not have been a house as such so perhaps no planning.
