I'm generally a proponent of EVs these days, but anyone looking for an ICE runabout would do worse than a SEAT Leon (if you don't mind VAG hardware).
£17,800 for a 1.5 115bhp hatch (£750 less if you are a "loyal SEAT customer")

That seems a bargain! I got a quote from the link for £17195, but had to add £750 because they had included the loyalty discount, so £17945. Exactly 6 inflationary years ago we paid £17,000 'on the road' for a similar runabout (Mrs F's Peugeot 2008), although it does have an arguably better powertrain (130 EAT6) and possibly better quality upholstery (Allure Premium).
