1.4 petrol Zafira 58 plate neighbours car.
Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you.
200 mpg................. of oil.
Rest of the car is very tatty but passes MOT and has decent tyres.
His mechanic says just run it till it drops,

I'm surprised a car burning that much oil can pass an MOT.
|
Agreed, must smoke like mad..
Edit: just thought,is it burning it or leak8ng?
|
I see it often... couple of doors away. No smoke..
I do believe he is looking for something else,,,

Per gallon? Surely not.
If there's no smoke, what is it doing with it?

Most manufacturers or distributors will still say that or worse. I think there are plenty of instances of people being told 600 miles per litre is within tolerance and I know of one BMW complaint that was refused on that basis. The owner was told to bring it back if it broke down.
A friend of mine was told the same in about 1970 with regard to a Mini. Not much has changed. Actually it might have. I think his Mini was doing 600 miles per pint now I think about it.

My money would be on the PCV valve (Positive Crakcase Ventilation) failure and/or blocked oil breather pipes etc. This causes excess crankcase pressure forcing oil past gaskets, seals inc crankshaft and valve oil seals. A common problem with low mileage cars where condensation mixes with oil vapour creating oil "mayo". Doesn't usually show up on an MOT as oil temperature and crankcase pressure doesn't have time to build up.
This happened with my old Octavia after it was semi retired from a long commute to very shot runs with Mrs BJ. It managed to pop up an oil low light on one journey from Yorkshire to surrey. In this case it was blocked pipes and valve. All ok after clearing out the blockage- Thereafter I checked it annually.
