I too am a transferee from the HJ site, and am using the same username. I was in fact registered here previously but resigned following an interesting exchange with the egotistical Chilean narcissist. Very pleased to rejoin.

Anyway, on the previous site I had posted about another car for my daughter. The well worn family owned Yaris she had was expiring and replacement prudent. I had some very useful feedback from others and we narrowed the choice down to Picanto, i20, Mazda2, 1.25 Ford and Swift with Yaris, Jazz and Polo being sufficiently expensive to adversely affect the age/ miles/ value equation.

My concern was that she would want a cutesy Fiat, a mini or something French, a Renault had been mentioned. As BOMAD is involved there was a delicate balance to be struck. I sent her an email saying what and why was not going to work - DSG gearboxes, Ecoboost engines and so on- and sent some examples of what met the (my) criteria.

Amongst the cars suggested was a VW Polo, 66 reg, 56k miles, tidy all round and within budget. The downside was no service history, but the garage is in the next village and has a stellar reputation, family run and a great boss. It came with a new cambelt, full service and a years MOT. Result! Daughter chuffed, mum and dad relieved, and as a bonus the rather tired 16 year old Yaris passed the MOT and was sold for a four figure sum.

What could have been fraught with man traps worked out well, but I have every sympathy with Alfa Man, there but for the grace of God go I.

Confession time. I had taken on board all the advice and had planned what to say under various scenarios but was completely taken aback when she said how much she loved the car. She really felt it was her car from the moment she saw it. Hence I have consistently found excuses to meet up when it is dark, raining heavily, or whatever reason I can reasonably hide behind. I know there will come a time when the subject will be broached but until then I am put at ease by the disclosure that recent promotions mean they collectively earn nearly twice what we do. So yes, she is grown up, she is independent, and, most importantly, she can afford to pay her way.

I know it's late on Sunday and I've had too much vino but how does the second post relate to the first? :-)

I'm thinking that Ex Alfa Man might have sold his motor to MGSpannerman's daughter. But it all sounds a bit mysterious to me :-)

MG spannerman referred in his post to Ex alfa man's post here:

car4play.com/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=32037

Ex alfa man responded.

Do keep up. And stop with the crap vino late on a Sunday night - it's not good for you.

Hmm well - I replied "€1.87 a bottle, same wine is the house wine in the local Indian at €13"

which prompted quite severe thread drift. Which I thought I'd slap into a new thread in non-motoring.

But not for the first time and likely not the last I managed to lose the replies into the ether somewhere along the way.

Mucho apols to everyone who'd spent time and effort contributing!!

However at least demonstrates to our newer members (and the Online Safety Police!!) that this site IS actively moderated - but we have become used to a degree of thread drift so please don't let that spoil your enjoyment :-)

It was a friend who imported these 6 bottles once a year..,now i bring them back from
Spain much cheaper… part of the 18 litre table wine allowance.

A took over to Spain two packets of Atora for Spanish resident friends..in exchange they bought me a lovely Portuguese Albariño, €7.25 from Consum supermarket, so a few of those now in the uk ( Southsea).

Ha ha, I spoke too soon! Apparently I'm about to get a bil from FedEx for duty and VAT.

Oh dear, have I joined a bunch of half-inebriated, thread drifting conspiracy theorists? Mind you, I like a nice Albarino myself, or even Alvarinho which does actually come from Portugal. There's a very nice Pecorino, from Italy, on offer in Waitrose at the moment for £6.75. A little drier than Albarino/Alvarinho but very enjoyable.

Don't worry, it's mostly early onset dementia. None of us here are getting any younger.

You're probably right. A common pattern is that a post will trigger a memory of something not obviously connected that happened 50 years ago.
