The back windows of our gaff in the Grove looked onto a length of elevated motorway about half a mile away between two skyscrapers. It was the ever-awake M4/M40 though, cars going whoosh whoosh whoosh all day and all night.

You got used to it in the end. Now I often wake up wondering what's happened to it, nothing but owls and nightingales here, to whit to woo, shriek!, warble warble. Damned inhuman non-techno clamour...

To revert to the OP though, you wouldn't want to be right on top of a motorway however well insulated the gaff was, however triple-glazed and cavity walled and so on. You'd feel it in your bones, through your feet, day and night, the muted bonk of huge slabs of prefab road wobbling in their sockets.

Cubitts Fitzpatrick Keir Christiani and Nielsen owe me many a night of undisturbed kip.

I went to a homeopath once or perhaps twice back in the mists of time. It was distinctly weird and didn't work.
