Volkswagen Jetta - VW Jetta: SE: 2.0 petrol: FSI tiptronic - Ronald
Hello all

Regular lurker here, but rare poster due to limited technical knowledge and DIY skill.

Does anyone have knowledge or experience of this engine, and/or the reliability of a tiptronic v DSG box? It's an 07 car which suits my budget (5k), mileage (60k) as I don't do a lot, and it has a driver's left footrest, a boot, and size which I like a lot.

Thanks everyone.

Back to the shadows now.

Why would you need DIY skills to buy a car? Or to comment on someone else's? Not all of us here change our oil more often than our socks; some of us are still young enough to have to go to work.

In other words, you have all the knowledge you need to contribute here. Attitude is far more important.

I have that engine in my Octavia. Quite refined, reasonably economical. Cambelt is due at 5 years or 60,000 miles.
No reliability worries with the engine.
I have the manual 6 speed. As I understand it this engine was only available with the torque converter proper auto, not the DSG. The clutch cost me over £500 to replace, so at least you don't have that to worry about.

What country are you in? Tiptronic and DSG are not necessarily the same which you know. Tiptronic is a Porsche term for an auto box with manual controls and they licence the name, e.g. to Audi and VW.

The VW DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) is a dual clutch dual shaft gearbox that is automated. Designed by BorgWarner. Audi calls the DSG type gearbox an S-Tronic (I've got one). But in the US I suspect VW use the Tiptronic(R) reference. But likely to still be the same DSG.

I thought you are UK resident... reference to 07 car.

I had the tiptronic gearbox on my Mitsubishi Lancer which I owned for two years. I used to use it manually occasionally, but would often forget it was in manual mode and wonder what that screaming noise from the engine was :)

Very reliable gearboxes though, I'd rather have one of those than a DSG. I have a conventional auto box on my Subaru Forester now, and I'm luvin it.

Is it the newer Subaru's that have the Lineartronic CVT box ?

Nay sir, it's a conventional slushbox. If I was looking to purchase a later model, I would consider the Lineartronic, as I have read good reports about it.

I think ON meant 'newer than yours'.

I haven't ground any Columbian Arabica beans yet.

Monsooned Malabar for me today. Filled my boots (or at least my bag) with it at Waitrose's special price on Saturday.

I see they are available green, avez vous ever tried roasting your own beans?

I love the idea; less keen on the smoke and the fire hazard. Home roasting is not for the unwary.

I used to have the next best thing: lived round the corner from an artisan coffee roaster, who needed only a phone call to put a batch on to my precise specification. There was so much residual gas in those beans for the first day or so that they would practically explode out of the jug when they met the hot water. Taste was unbeatable, though; I miss that place.

I'll have to check that out then. I bet Panasonic make a machine for that sort of thing :)

Yeah, I'm the kind of crank that would have a go at roasting raw coffee beans. All I need to get is a baking tray with holes in it.

I bet you're not the kind of crank that would make their own chocolate from the bean. Now there's a challenge.

What, the cocoa bean ... of course. You made me think there for a minute, as I've 'bean' reading about eating chocolate-covered coffee beans.

The Legacy/Outback diesel automatics are CVTs, marketd by Subaru as 'lineartronic'. They've also announced a diesel CVT Forester, here in Ireland at least.

The older petrol auto Subarus were torque converters: 4 speed for 2 and 2.5 litre Legacy, Ouback and Forester, 5 speed with paddle shifters on the 3/3.6 litre cars.

I have the Lineatronic in my 2014 Outback and I like it, most of the research I did before buying suggested it is reliable too. Economy isn't bad for such a big 4WD petrol car 28-30mpg around town and low 40s mpg on a run although in the UK I guess it would need to be the diesel given the fuel prices and tax regime.

Other posts suggest that the OP's car choice is a torque converter auto, if it's DSG then as a 2.0L it will be wet clutch, my experience suggests that you should avoid the DQ200 dry clutch variant fitted in lower powered derivatives.

bet you are not loving the fuel consumption.

I don't really do enough miles to bother about the fuel consumption.

You will have had a torque converter automatic gearbox with manual controls. Mitsubishi marketed this as Tiptronic® and paid Porsche for their use of the trademark. Tiptronic® is not a particular make/model of gearbox.

In the US, VW markets their DSG boxes as Tiptronic®.

Forgot to add, the FSi prefers a diet of super unleaded fuel, as recommended by the manufacturer. Mine runs best on Tesco Momentum.

Find the same for my 170PS 1.4 TSi Sports Jetta, although Shell V-Power isn't bad...:-)
