What causes the centre part of the tyre's tread to wear excessively (as opposed to the inner or outer edges)? My Old Man's just spotted this during the MOT. They are pricey 17-inch Michelins. They were not low on pressure, if anything over-pressurised. But if they were over-pressurised, wouldn't this cause the outer edges to wear out more quickly, not the centre? Any insight appreciated!

Overinflation would do exactly what you have found.

The higher the pressure the more the tread becomes rounded instead of flat and therefore the outer edges of the tread are no longer in contact with the road (except possibly when cornering) and the centre of the tread wears the most.

Thanks for clearing this up guys. The Old Fella was led to believe that UNDER-inflation had caused the wear, which confused me a bit. Wonder which bright spark did the MOT for him and told him that...?!
