Mathematical pundits can perhaps work this out better?

I was calculating that the National Minimum Wage for 18 year olds is £4.98ph or £199.2 p/week which would currently buy approx 152ltrs of petrol.

When I were 18 there was no NMW, but I think I remember earning approx £9pw - petrol was then 5/6 per gallon so my weekly wage then would have bought approx 150ltrs.

Notta Lotta People know that!

Couple of "value of money" links here.

This one has a few options and in terms of purchasing power shows both RPI and average earnings which I think is what you're after.

This from our favourtite newspaper is based around 2009 but easier to use - just using RPI by the look of it.

My dad passed his test in 1970 and was living in central London. He had a basic job in the local library and on that wage he could afford to buy a banger (1956 Minor) and run it. He said insurance was so cheap it wasn't even an issue. I think the main cost of motoring those days is that cars always broke down especially if it was a 14 year old Minor!.

I have seen pictures of that car and I pointed out to my dad his tyres were bald!.

It is too hard to compare like for like costs really, some things have gone down a lot while other things have gone up a lot.

But, like the cost of the insurance in 'those days', it would cost just a few pound notes to put right again :)

Up to and for a while after the war, the cost of goods or products was compared by how many weeks' wages were needed to buy an individual item. These days you generally need to work fewer weeks to buy the equivalent, yet vastly superior goods or products.

A new Mini was around £550 when petrol was 2/6 per gallon.

Anew Panda today is c £8,000 -16 times the Mini price.
Petrol is now c £6 per gallon - 48 times the 2/6 price.

"A new Mini was around £550 when petrol was 2/6 per gallon. "

No it wasn't. Petrol was just a tad under 5/- a gallon (25p) in 1960 and a New Mini was roughly £500

The last time petrol was 2/6 a gallon was 1949

When was it last £1.30 a gallon, the early 80's ? I can remember that it was 70/80p a gallon when I started driving in the late 70's.

Amazed at how Fish & chips have gone up (6p in 1960 and £4.50 in 2009 - 7400% change)
About £6.50 in our village now but I stopped in a town near Aberdeen the other evening and ordered F&C thinking it might be cheaper and fresher than in E Midlands what with being close to Aberdeen, Peterhead and Frazerburgh, all fishing ports. £8.80!!!!!!!! And the portion wasn't as big as our local chippy in Barrow on Soar!!
But then I also remember serving people at a petrol station when I were a lad - they would ask for 4 gallons and get change from a quid - and I would check oil, water, tyres for them (not washer fluid - no cars (?) had washers then).
Also had a mate who won £500 on premium bonds in 1967. He had a relation who worked at Mini plant and got a brand new one (discounted) for his £500.

1970 UK 4 star was 4s 8d (24p a UK Gallon) - I took home £54 / month

Saudi Arabia

10 gallons(US) (85 Octane approx) + 200 King Size and you got change out of 20 riyals
(£1= £10.8 riyals then!)

My take home pay was £475 / month (accommodation and food was free, I spent roughly £20-£30 per month and lived well!)

It's called ABERDEEN Pricing - - 2 x sons live just outside Aberdeen and work there. One bought a brand new house 2 years ago - he got a gardening company from Dundee (70 miles away) for 50% of the local contractor.........he gets his car serviced at main dealer in the Central belt £150-£200 less on a major service.

30 yr old graduate engineer can make £80K in oil industry, 40 yr old can make £150K+ on contractor/self-employed basis. OK for them - pity the nurse/teacher/policeman trying to get ends to meet on £25K-£40K (say!!).......unless their partner is in oil!!
