That would surely depend on the terms of the extended warranty contract. I had one for my dishwasher with Currys. I paid for it annually to Currys. They in turn contracted the actual repair to the local agent for the manufacturer, Zanussi.
Agree though that the usefulness of consumer legislation declines with the passage of time.
