 Rough casting - VxFan
I've previously seen a DIY programme a couple of years ago where they converted a garage into a play room (or something like that).

They had a hand held machine that did the throwing of the stones where they replaced the up and over garage door for brickwork, then replicated the existing cladding.

Damned if I can remember the programme though.

A quick Google found the sort of machine they used though. So yes, there are better ways than you mentioned.
