There is a long-standing engineering convention that a screw-in dipstick should be read with it resting on the threads, but a press-in dipstick should be read pressed right home.
But as I said, with a lawnmower it makes no difference at all.
What is worth knowing is which way to tip the lawnmower when clearing a blockage from round the blade or the exit chute. One way only dribbles petrol onto the grass, the other lets oil flow into the silencer causing clouds of smoke on restarting.
