They fitted Whitworth nuts and bolts of the correct size every time.
And of course Whitworth and metric spanners can both be used on any nut or bolt provided the fit is close enough.
It doesn't pay to be slobbish though, you can ruin the head of a tight bolt and make your life a misery for an unspecified period.
Some rusty wheel bolts on my VW 911 caused a problem once. Borrowed some sockets and a huge tommy bar from a garage. One of the sockets just exploded when subjected to force, but the other withstood two coppers jumping up and down on the tommy bar, bending it severely.
A bit of heat and penetrating oil made the thing shift in the end. The coppers were chuffed, good chaps they were.
