It manifests at low speed on full lock as a groan, or did when I had it. Caused by water ingress and rust on the plates of the clutch in the case. There's a TSB for the procedure that I have written up either here or on the other forum, I'll see if I can find it.
gb, is your lad an "enthusiastic" driver? I don't think heavy acceleration or quick launches with any lock on (e.g. when turning right across traffic) are good for UJs. Since trashing the drive shafts on a couple of VWs in the 80s (in 25,000 miles) I make a point of getting the wheels straight before applying full beans. This problem is potentially more acute with the torque from a diesel.
