I think the taboo on gruesome pictures is largely an Anglo-Saxon thing. In Singapore's Straits Times a couple of years ago, I remember a report of a fatal accident involving a van and a scooter, which (a) concentrated on the traffic disruption the accident had caused, and (b) was accompanied by a large picture showing the head and shoulders of the unfortunate scooterist protruding from under the van. Not pleasant, but arguably a more honest account of the effects of an accident than we might get here.
